1954! With my grandad and uncle who I had been bothering as they went to every home match and then groused about it for the rest of the weekend. I desperately wanted to do 'grown-up' men's stuff. Don't know who we played as the game wasn't as exotic as my eight year old's imagination thought it would be. Had great fun however playing with other kids on the top of the Holmesdale bank. Somehow ended up hooked and continue the family tradition of grousing ever since.
Fading memories -
Johnny Byrne, best ever palace player (sorry Wilf).
Terry Long's goal against Real Madrid.
Cliff Holton, hardest shot I have ever seen.
Old time rivaries - Millwall of course, Coventry, Peterborough (the Posh). Brighton never in it then, I blame Mullery.
The peanut lady.
The pre colour programmes, small format printed in Waddon New Road.
Push and Run style football, in the fourth division!
Don Rogers. He gets the ball, the crowd's intake of breath, the fear in the eyes of the opposition defence - 'GOAL!!!!!'
Flanagan and Allen (geddit)
'Queen in Brawl at Palace) best ever football headline.
Wilf.

April 17th 1967, a Monday night friendly v Dundee United under the floodlights at Selhurst resulting in a thrilling nil all draw, hooked straight away! Still only the one wooden main stand, with muddy slopes to stand on above the concrete terraces. A roller coaster ride ever since! Best player? Peter Taylor, Don Rodgers, Wrighty, Jacko, Kenny S, all live well in the memory.

Now this may sound strange, but if you also went to away games during the 80s, do you remember an elderly, white haired Palace supporting lady always screaming ‘come on Palace’ throughout the whole game.

It didn’t matter how we were doing, she always screamed really loudly and was a bit of a ‘character’ amongst the Palace fans.

A bit of nostalgia or craziness - I’m not sure! Wonder if any of you reading this remember her or have any info to share?!?

I sat on my dad's shoulders age 8 years when he took me to Selhurst Park for my first game in 1948. Don't ask me which game but I remember the one stand and the vast expanse of steep grass embankments where you could recline in the sunshine.

My lowlight was the stoning of the Oxford United team coach (I wrote to Cyril Spiers and offered a donation towards the damage - naive fool that I was)

The highlights were the rise of Johnny Byrne followed by the great John Jackson (bravest keeper I ever saw) and the 3-4 defeat at Villa Park in the Cup. Ronnie Rooke, Ronnie Allen, Cliff Holton, the blonde idol with the long throw: Bobby Woodruff and Dennis Uphill - a great trier who missed ten times more than he scored and to whom I took my name here. In my days Division One was an impossible dream but we enjoyed our lowly status and our iconic name.

Will I live to see us in Europe? Maybe, I am only 82 years old after all .... and Palace fans are hopeless optimists !

Man and boy Palace since my first game in 1948 sitting on my dad's shoulders

Been a Palace supporter since 1953. but I don't remember many matches before ,say, 1957.
My dad lived in Herne Hill early in the 20th Century, and started to support them because they were playing at the Herne Hill Cycle track and it was convenient for him. When they moved from there he continued to support them and he dragged me along to Selhurst Park when I was 7 years old.
I can't say that I am much of a true "supporter" these days because I've moved around so much and it is only convenient for me to attend matches if my daughter can take me. She is a true supporter and although I disprove of such things she has an Eagle tattoo on her lower back. Each to their own I suppose

I think for most current palace fans it’s thick rather than thin. X years in loadsawonga league. I can’t compete w gents from 50s and early 60s. But thing that unites us is love for whatever idea we have that palace represents in our lives. I think the underdog attracts a certain type of person in addition to their neighbours don’t you think. I am in Newcastle tonight. Wondering what team st patrick will put out. Hope it’s a good one w room for one or 2 youngns. COYP🥳

I remember that Choules own goal very well.

Choules didn't come on the scene till the early fifties. And I don't recall him being known as "Chopper". But a few years later Tony Collins and Bert Howe both took on that nickname. I'll never forget Choules, on account of one of the most spectacular own goals I've seen. I believe he was a good forty yards from the Whitehorse goal, but he passed back, and to everyone's horror the ball took off and sailed over the goalie (?Vic Rouse). That made it 2-0 to Carlisle. The other reason for remembering this is that in those days there was a raffle for the match ball, which a schoolboy syndicate to which I belonged won on that day. For a long time afterwards the Len Choules ball was kicked about in Brockwell Park.

By the way, Sir James, I am the same age as you, but didn't start till 1954 - so a novice compared with you!

I am 79 and used to stand on the Park Road embankment with my dad and uncle. I have great memories of the 1950's and 60's seasons. Now living in Barbados but still follow the club and watch the games on Sky.

50 years next year. Best spot, the standing area in front of the New Stand complete with peanut sellers & within earshot of 'Joyce the voice'.

The legend that is Joyce the voice!! There was so few of us travelling away in the early to mid 80’s everyone knew her. Bless her, bellowing out ‘come on palace fight’ on some far flung freezing cold nearly empty northern away end

I changed my allegiance from Liverpool to Palace around '86 when I was about 9 years old. My Nan won tickets to Palace at my school fate and I went to see my first ever game which was a 1-1 draw with Sheff Utd.
I used to go when my mum could take me so ended up going on the weekends when Charlton were at home (at Selhurst) a few times the first couple of years but still wore my Palace scarf.

My cousin who is a few years youger than me was pressured into supporting Liverpool by me and still follows them. He's been all around Europe including the final in Istanbul whilst i've been in the away end at Walsall, scunthorpe, Stockport etc!

BUT I WOULDN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY!!!
