Just to clarify: Joshua did not swerve Wilder. An offer was put to Wilder which was turned down by the Wilder. Joshua will be fighting for his old belts in his next fight as he has already stated that he wishes to activate the re-match clause. In regards to what AJ brings to the table (with or without belts) is the potential for Wilder to make way more money than ever before due to AJ's box office sales. 8 thousand Brits flew out to watch lasts night fight. Wilder has had tile fights in his own back yard where he has not manged to get 8 thousand fans. In boxing money talks. Spot on. Wilder was deluding himself he deserved more of a % cut in a Joshua v Wilder fight. Personally they should compromise more and get these fights done, but this is as much about the promoters and business managers and their reputations and finances as it is the boxers. A shame that such a great sport when the contests are even is controlled and manipulated in this way but they’ve all got their beaks in the pot so it’s to be expected, as is football tournaments and world cups being held in low populated countries with huge wealth or offering big money. I’m not interested in razmataz, just the sport, and as raw as possible, but everything good gets spoilt by greed.

I read on the bbc before the fight that this was the first training camp that AJ didn’t feel ‘burnt out’ from. Maybe on reflection that hints at cutting a few corners in his preparation. Yes, I expect getting into the right mindset for what was supposed to be a walkover becomes a lot to process when you realise it's not. In fairness to him, he's never overly bothered with endurance his whole career, because he's rarely needed it . If he'd knocked Ruiz out in round 3 like he almost did, we wouldn't be having this conversation so it's a strategy that's served him well so far. Back to the drawing board now though perhaps. He was out on his feet after those two early knockdowns and I don't think he recovered. Beyond that, Ruiz is not only strong, but has deceptively fast reflexes and a tight defense for a fat guy. I just thought AJ would figure out his style and make fast work of this, but that just didn't ever happen. Still, I'm sure he'll be back. Out of all of the heavyweights on the scene he's one of the more respectful and disciplined with tremendous knockout power so I'll be cheering him on in the rematch.. if it happens.

I'm afraid this fight confirms what I always feared about Joshua. He isn't very good. Out of the big three, only Fury can box. The current heavyweight renaissance is largely based on smoke and mirrors.

To think that Ruiz floored Joshua 4 times and he was a fighter with not that high a KO percentage - Only 64%. I suppose there will be a lot of knee-jerk reactions after this defeat but I have always felt that the hype has been greater than the substance. Edited by Willo (02 Jun 2019 12.17pm)

I was very surprised by the Katie Taylor fight. She was not her usual self. The occasion seemed to get to her.

I wondered about Joshua at the moment Klitschko was stopped. He barely celebrated, he just walked back to his corner with a sort of rye smile. The way he took the defeat last night might show a bit of a lack of passion for the game. As for the fight, he showed way too much respect to Ruiz in the 1st round and let the Mexican get confident. When you have an enormous reach advantage not sticking the jab is criminal. He barely threw the jab all night and apart from the knock down he landed no power shots whatsoever. Strange performance and I question his desire for boxing.

AJ has been sleep walking for a long time and been looked after this is why he really has not gone up against the likes of Fury/Wilder Eddie Hearn is the problem. A few people I know that have been in boxing game for long time have been saying his training is all wrong he should be improving boxing skills yet he is going backwards way to stiff like a robot burning of too much energy with carrying too much muscle.

I agree with a lot of this especially about the jab for a big man he doesn't seem very effective with it as he should. He does need to think about his training and maybe switch to a new trainer he has all the attributes but as you say he seems to have been going backwards lately.
