Maidstone Yes, go to Maidstone for the day. It will certainly take a day to drive in through the traffic jams, try to find somewhere to park, give up and then drive out the other side through the traffic. Or go to Tunbridge Wells ... not a bad town but the only place you can stop is on a red traffic light.

London seems to be quite peculiar to, to me. In that you have areas of great affluence, right next door to very deprived areas. I had the experience in Forest Hill, of seeing the aftermath of several stabbings over the years, and also nearly being shot by armed police conducting a drugs raid close to my flat. East London seemed the most uninhabitable place. Stratford and Beckton easily spring to mind. Surely no-one must even live in Beckton ? It is just a former toxic dump, turned into industrial units
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Eliot - and Plaistow? A happy shopper, a launderette, a william hills, dallas chicken, two tower blocks and a few rows of terraced houses - and that's it, how Ian Dury was inspired to write one of his greatest numbers by this bleak khazi is an utter mystery

Anywhere in the south east is bad. Kent in particular is deteriorating rapidly. Overcrowded, poor infrastructure and noticeable absence of investment, poor planning ... if indeed they ever had a plan ... they just throw up tatty housing estates anywhere these days. It's merely regarded as the access point for constant heavy traffic to ferries at Dover and the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone. Pity any poor bugger that lives here. But on a positive note, I’ve been marooned deep in Kent over twenty years now and I haven’t been stabbed, shot, raped or mugged, my house hasn’t been broken into, my car hasn’t been nicked or vandalised, my daughter has grown up here to be a fine young lady and my house is worth about four times what I paid for it. But other than that I make you right
