Didn’t put any words in your mouth, you said I had my head up my arse for suggesting MacArthur in not good at threading through balls - usually a skill we associate with gifted creative players with quick feet and good vision. Does that sound like anyone on our bench? MacArthur is none of those things. Not sure MacArthur been a “threat in the final 3rd” this season tbh. Meyer is not a number 10. He played def mid for schalke. He could be asked to do the exact role that MacArthur did yesterday and we would probably score more goals. Everything you say about MacArthur and his historical importance is basically correct, apart from him being a “threat” this year where he has 2 goals, one of which was a cross. You cannot judge Meyer on 1 or 2 games here or there, he needs a run of games otherwise it’s apples to oranges however the evidence was clear for everyone to see yesterday. MacArthur had a mare, committed the worst miss I have seen all year and in 10 mins on the pitch Meyer added more to our attacking game than MacArthur had all game long. Agree.

I think last night was a huge example of the difference Max makes when he plays.

For the sake of his career he will be looking to get out of Palace, that's obvious. Personally I dont think the 3 in midfield works, we just get overun so to go to a 4 Max should get a chance. Arguably Kouyate should aguably be playing too so when we play a 3 its just doesnt work. Roys just not going to drop both Jimmy and Jeff. Other issue for me regarding Max is, to me hes made his best performances when coming off the bench. When he has started games has been quite the same. I think it’s becoming clear that Max must’ve slippped Roy’s wife some German sausage or something, because we do look a better team with him in the side, but Roy does seem reluctant for some reason. Edited by monkey (28 Feb 2019 11.29am)

The only pleasure I can draw from last night is that Meyer played for a bit longer than the 15 mins he typically gets. Bottom line he should be the second or third name in the team sheet after Wilf and Milo. And not on the effing wing.

Burnley away next, and you can make the case for Schlupp or Kouyate rather than Meyer, but the game after that is home to a highly defensive Brighton side, and it will be a crying shame not to deploy Meyer from the start.

Meyer is our best player, absolutely mustard. Struggled with the pace of the league in the beginning, but he's there now. I've slept on it and Hodgson is just a daft old c***, f*** him and his Plan A or nothing football, predictable line ups and bizarre substitutions. He had a stronger attack on the bench than on the pitch last night and he brought on Schlupp? And to think there's people on here foolish enough to argue he's one of England's greatest ever managers and had massive success, I'm sick of this nonsense. He's an old, mediocre manager on the wane big time. I've never said it before, but he's got to go. Start Ayew up front and try to defend a one goal lead Vs Southampton? PVA undroppable despite how bad he plays? Meyer on the bench ffs?! We are sleepwalking into relegation and even if we turn things around can realistically only catch 13th. This is unacceptable, that is a top ten squad all day long. Edited by Midlands Eagle (02 Feb 2019 9.01am) In terms of 'Plan A', Guardiola only has a 'Plan A' and no 'Plan B' but it is a very impressive 'Plan A' ! Regards PVA, I believe a lack of options plays it's part.Ward can replace AWB at right-back but we don't have a natural left-back cover available.Schlupp has played there but he only fills-in and he has deficiences in that position.

Glad I'm not the only one who see's why PvA really is undroppable, can't drop him if you've got no one good enough to replace him. Schlupp is playing so well at lcm at the moment we won't see him dropped back to lb any time soon.

I haven't read this thread but McArthur and Meyer are not similar players. Meyer is not really a defensive midfielder. He is great if we need to press but I'm sure Roy thinks that McArthur is better to stop the opposition midfield. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (28 Feb 2019 11.58am)

Actually I think PVA is under additional pressure because he doesn't get the level of cover from Schlupp that is required* *A polite way of saying Schlupp does f*** all tracking back and often gives the ball away. Whilst we all want to see Meyer start at Burnley, myself included, I would be amazed if Roy does start him as Burnley are quite a physical aggressive side. Kouyate will be back in I reckon so one of McArthur or Schlupp has to be dropped, personally I would go with McArthur to make way. Also in regards to Meyer my impression is that Roy, along with many other managers, like an impact substitute to change a game so maybe that is the role he sees for Max.

Meyer is reputedly one of our highest paid players and he hasn’t joined to be a bench warmer who is only trusted to start in cup games.
