I haven't bothered to read this thread because the bits I did look at seemed so unbelievably tedious and pointlessly argumentative. But there are a couple of things in the original link that seem worthy of comment.

First, a member of the public is to be commended for helping at the incident. Quite right IMO, but I thought the police had always told us not to intervene in violent incidents. Should make up their minds.

Second, while I can understand the head of the Police Federation wondering whether it's worth trying to detain someone who's resisting arrest, it strikes me as a pretty unhelpful thing to say in public.

By the way, what penalty did Cantona get? Not imprisonment, as I recall - unlike what seems to be awaiting these two.
