I think people have forgotten Murray wanted first team football which is another reason he left. Gayle has played this season in the league 26 and only scored 5 that is poor. Gayle has scored similar to Murray. 5 goals and 2 assists in 1300 minutes. Murray has 7 goals and no assists in 1600 minutes (excluding penalties) How is Gayle's season poor?

1. Benteke scored 13 goals last year from open play, not 15. The fact that his teammates let him take 2 penalties doesn't mean he's better than if he had not taken them. But ok, let's go with the number 15 as he also accounted for 2 assists last season. His 13 goals from open play and 2 asists came in 3200 minutes, less than 1 every 200 minutes. If you count out the penalties he scored while at Villa and Liverpool, he pretty much has a similar ratio. 2. Gayle scored 23 and assisted 2 in 2300 minutes in all competitions last year, with no penalties taken. If his teammates had let Gayle take 2 penalties like Benteke, he could have had 2 more goals. But disregard the Championship goals. Gayle in the PL had scored for Palace 20 goals (18 from open play) and provided 1 assist in 2700 minutes. That's 1 every 140 minutes. This season he has 5 goals and 2 assists in 1300 minutes for Newcastle, somewhat keeping his tally (leading the line, not as second striker). 3. Glenn Murray had 19 goals from open play in the Championship, but 6 assists too in 3400 minutes. In the Premier League he had scored 8 from open play and assisted 3 in 1500 minutes for Crystal Palace and Bournemouth. This season (counting out the penalties) he has 6 goals and no assists in 1500 minutes. Bottom line: if one striker takes penalties, his goals appear to be much more than what they truly are and perception makes him seem like a better player than he truly is. So Championship goals equate to the same as Premiership goals then. Got it. And penalties don't count either. Right. Bottom line- Benteke scored more goals in open play in the Premiership last season than either Murray or Gayle are likely to get this season for their respective clubs. Don't get me wrong- Benteke IS having a bloody shocker of a season. Murray has scored a massive FOUR more goals this season and Gayle THREE (from open play, of course)- so you believe we would be massively better off with them instead. Yes, no doubt if we still had those 2 instead of Benteke then we'd be top 10. Or if we still had Allardyce in charge. Or if Wilf hadn't been injured. No point bitching about what we SHOULD have done or what MIGHT have been. Benteke has not overnight become the worst player in the world, has he? He remains our main striker. Sorloth looks promising. We're still in a really bad situation. I think we'd be in a worse situation if we had never signed Benteke but had kept Murray and Gayle. You think differently. Fair enough.

Wickham was a Parish signing. Selling Murray was Parish's decision having received an offer that he couldn't refuse - don't blame him, at the time it was a good price. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but if you look at the hard facts and how things have turned out, then we clearly have had the wrong end of those deals.

Those only "3 more goals", as you say, scored by Gayle came in 1300 minutes, not 1900, as Benteke has had (that's 50% more playing time). Edited by mattteo (04 Mar 2018 8.44pm)

i doubt either will score 17 goals in a PL season like bentekkers did last season. this season has seen him ravaged by injury & confidence issues. this season wickham hasnt kicked a ball due to injury. both are better than gayle & murray...lets look forward not back. we got a good shift from both those players & turned a profit.

It's been explained here times and times again it was 13 goals in the PL from open play!! 13 goals. In 3100 minutes!!!! Read the thread! He had 2 penalties that he scored. It's not the same thing if you compare him to other strikers who don't take penalties for their teams. Now you want to include his 2 goals in the Cup against Bolton? Probably worst team in the Championship last season

Jedi should have been allowed to stay just to be a part of the Club and to have him in the squad.
