Dean was in a good position to judge the distance between the players. As far as was concerned Chambers extended his arm to make contact with the ball. One can debate this decision until the "Cows come home".At the end of the day Dean made a decision in real-time and only he will know for certain on what basis he awarded the penalty.Dermot Gallagher having seen it on TV (And probably numerous replays) felt it was the wrong decision. Edited by Willo (31 Dec 2017 9.51pm) If Dean was in a good position to judge anything at all he would have been as clear as everyone else that this was no more a pen than I am the Byzantine Emperor. And if he wasn't in a good position to judge the matter he shouldn't have given a penalty because the benefit of the doubt falls to the defence. Either way he f***ed it up. OK?

Dean clearly saw what I saw - an arm moving towards the ball and making contact with it. The decision has certainly resulted in a lot of debate ! Edited by Willo (31 Dec 2017 10.04pm)

The key word that Willo used is "current." Improve this squad in the next month, hopefully get Sakho back and play the way they have been and this is a solid mid-table club. As far as Soton is concerned, no Van Dijk but they have an extra day to prepare. I'm still optimistic we'll get a positive result out of there. Edited by kenbarr (31 Dec 2017 10.04pm)

Yesterday one of these idiots not only stopped and thought about it but actually went and consulted his f***ing linesman FFS, then thought about it some more, scratched his arse, looked at his tea leaves, and finally decided to ignore the linesman and still gave a completely bollocks decision which changed the result of the game. So don't kid yourself that a ref that waits x seconds before blowing up is evidence of a correct decision. That decision was bollocks, so was this one. and so were many, many more. Edited by chateauferret (31 Dec 2017 11.57pm) Sometimes referees are accused of not pondering for a few seconds and giving instant decisions - At least Dean gave himself thinking time, taking various factors into consideration. Obviously his decision to award a penalty will form part of the post-match forensic appraisal of his performance.

Which process has led to the progressive improvement in refereeing standards over recent seasons, right? Oh, hang on...

The decision was wrong but Dean was swayed by the home crowd chanting for the penalty. Human error for which I’m sure he now realises he got it wrong. Happens every week and will do so until technology takes the decision for the ref?

Just as managers and some players are interviewed after each game, referees and linesmen should also be interviewed to giver their opiniuon on the decisions made during the game. Why are they never, ever seen or heard speaking during the season? WHat have they got to hide?

Why are they never, ever seen or heard speaking during the season? WHat have they got to hide? This seems to be true in most if not all sports. Match officials are kept away from the media as if any contact between the two would contaminate their integrity. It was considered scandalous that David Elleray gave an interview to a Croydon Advertiser reporter and explained why he sent three off (two WImbledon and Nigel Martyn of Palace) back in 1991. They should be allowed to be interviewed so that their side of controversial decisions can be heard. Occasionally, they can even say they missed the call, as baseball umpire Jim Joyce owned up to a few years ago that cost a pitcher a perfect game. The ump was praised for his honesty. Let's demystify sports officiating.
