Negative chanting in general winds me up a bit. I have been to games where all the opposition fans did was take the piss out of the other team. Not one but of support for their own team. The worst was Worthing fans a few years back against Burgess Hill Town. Got tiresome pretty quick. A bit of a wind up has it's place such as "can you hear [insert team] sing?" but we are a club with great fans and a lot of clever songs. We can support our club for 90 mins and that's the most crushing thing for away fans to hear.

Totally agree, we can singing for 90 minutes without being homophobic and it'll be a shame if we let our selves down at the Brighton games as it's clear the BBC and then other news outlets will be all over it. I hope positives can come out of this under hand documentary and the club and fans can use it to really show what south londons all about. It certainly ain't being homophobic.

I didn't misunderstand at all. You have already discovered there was agenda. If people have been misquoted then the answer is tackle BBC with acomplaint before it goes out nationally. They will view it and may instruct an edit particularly if it does not change programme message and they could be forced to publish a disclaimer. You also don't know if it was a BBC made programme or an independant. However BBC is broadcasting it so they do investigate such complaints. Inviting him on the show in my view can only have a detrimental effect at best you will prevent any further bad publicity. The only reason he will attend will be to further his agenda. If you do invite him you need to set the agenda and it should not be his programme. I would suggest His experiences of "coming out" in a game like Rugby Union and what can Football learn from this The club may have a view as I suspect they are considering there next actions The individuals are welcome to tackle it with BBC. Personally I think there is a wider conversation to be had and whatever the agenda, it is good that anything is produced to bring the discussion to the table.

Hambo massive respect to you guys for the show and especially for your attitude over this. It's definitely a good thing that this gets airtime and that the whole topic can be broached. We really need people like you spinning it on its head in to a positive for change. Just so everyone can reflect a little over how 'banter' from some can have hurtful effects 'not intended'. My girlfriends brothers ex boyfriend killed himself last week. Now I'm not saying this is the sole reason as it likely isn't, for someone to take there own life I imagine they must have a tortured sole and be in an extremely low and dark place. But I do know from the chats I've had is that he worked in an environment where derogatory gay 'banter' was common place. He feared for his job if he came out at work and had to low self esteem to look elsewhere. His colleagues didn't know he was gay but due to the nature / culture of the company he certainly would have had difficulties had he told anyone. The things being said weren't directed at him but to hear these things from the people around you, even in jest hits home especially if your not thick skinned. The short of it is, it was one of many things that eat away at him and pushed him in to a lonely and dark place but just becuase we might see it as banter really doesn't mean that guy over there does. The words we say have the meaning that we say them in, but to others they can have far deeper meaning. It's not right for our fans or any fans to have to be at a football match and hear these words, especially for the people they do effect. Which could be anyone, including the guy or girl next to you. Palace & proud

We'll have to be on our best behaviour when we play the Tarquins as the BBC will be all over us. One wrong word and they'll make us out to be worse than Millwall anyone who posted in that thread was foolish imo, setting yourself up to be set up. Not condoning the homophobia mind, no place for that s***. by the way, when the weed sing about us being pikeys (apparently) and burning our town down I hope that kind of thing is given equal scorn by the media. Somehow I doubt it though...

Okay, have now watched the relevant part of the documentary. I was correct that Parchmore was one of the fools quoted, surprise surprise. I was intrigued to see Gareth quote one of my responses as an example of an opinion which causes him to put his head in his hands - a state of despair which could perhaps have been avoided if he'd read the whole message, or even the whole sentence. Here is what I wrote: 'I don't think many people who join in the 'Brighton take it up the bum' chants have any real malicious intent, and are being knowingly juvenile for a laugh. But the chants do effectively put all homosexuals on the wrong side of the 'us vs them' divide, and equate them with a range of undesirable characteristics. Considering the history of instances of homophobia in football, the fact that these massed chants perpetuate intolerance, and the fact that there's little room for subtlety when it comes to a whole crowd chanting, I should think this sort of thing is best avoided - especially given the media profile of our club now.' (https://www.holmesdale.net/page.php?id=106&tid=166166&page=2) Gareth only quoted the section in bold. Furthermore, the documentary makes it sound as if the author of my statement was also the author of the message underneath, the content of which I did not agree with. ... Edited by Bangell (28 Jul 2017 12.38am) I work in the film, TV and entertainment business and I have faced this type of selective editing my entire career. I have been intentionally misquoted like this many times. I find it to be a violation of trust when someone turns a positive comment into a negative one. Why the hell should I give interviews if people do this kind of thing? For example, if you reply, "I suppose it's possible that all people from Cornwall beat their children but it's very unlikely," and the quote comes back "... all people from Cornwall beat their children..." then that is dishonest. What's the point of a reporter asking for input and measured comments if they are going to intentionally skew the quote to reflect something that was not its original intent? Bangell, you did a great job. Your reply was fair and measured. I'm very disappointed that Gareth Thomas did such a number on you, considering the thoughtfulness of your reply.

Surely the suggestion that implying being a member of this group is an insult is just as much a hate crime, is it not? How many Palace supporters, completely innocent of any involvement in the 2011 riots, are unfairly subjected to those chants?
Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

The poster referred to people burning down their town which was a reference to the 2011 riots and it should have been obvious what part of his post I was referring to.
