According to an interview I watched on BBC World News, a writer for a building trade publication said the council inspected the building while the refurbishments were going on but not after they were completed. He also said that "fire stopping" material had to removed between floors for the work to be done and was supposed to be replaced upon completion.

And Thatcher then sold them to people.

It's was obvious from the first pictures of the tower, that the cladding was helping/causing the fire to spread, rapidly.
Old, ugly, tower blocks like these, all over the country, have had the same quick/cheap fix, of new external cladding to make them less of an eye sore.
Many new builds too, use different types of cladding. What the/if any standards these materials should meet is surely now a massive question.
The single staircase in the building would have become more like a chimney, than an escape route. I doubt anyone would be able to put there face over the top of a normal house chimney, for more than a few seconds. Now imaging what the chimney from a fire that's the size of a 27 storey building would be like. That was the residents only escape route.
Lessons will hopefully be learnt. New laws will probably be passed. But unfortunately money always comes first, and nobody is going to fund the cost of putting so many potential death traps right. That is the sad truth.
It's fcuking horrendous to think what it must have been like for the people trapped in there.
Hopefully most of the dead will have been asleep and overcome by fumes. As anything else just doesn't bare thinking about.

I think organised crime when I see things like this. People who use corruption and low bids to win contracts, use questionable materials to maximise profit margins, cut safety, circumvent regulations, pay off inspectors etc.

No amount of politics can really stop that.

I think it is far simpler, nobody thought it would happen. An internal fire spreading via the cladding to the rest of the block. At least it was concrete core as I have stated elsewhere, cladding over an external core and .......we don't want to contemplate.

Anti-foreigner? Na plonker, I'm just anti people like you.

I've taught and helped more foreigners than I could count. You talk out of your butt so much your lips down there must hurt.

Let's wait and find out the actual cause, eh?

And Thatcher then sold them to people.

Very few high rises, if any, were built under Thatcher.

Many people were basically forced to move into tower blocks under protest so that so called slum clearance could occur under Wilson

You do know it has been reported that they are council homes rented out by a non-profit?

to be fair to stirlingsays, you are jumping the gun a bit, and your history on the site suggests a political motivation behind doing so. this is from a purely objective viewpoint

Cheap shot, so you found 3 much smaller events within the whole of Europe? Yep, call people trolls when you lose the debate, classic way to admit you're wrong.

How was that a cheap shot based upon your comments, which in essence said this doesn't happen elsewhere. It does. And who was debating? I was pointing out your crass bigotry.

If you think hundreds of people being killed and injured are "smaller events" that speaks volumes.

And the buyers who supplied the contractors with flammable cladding?

The more I hear about this, everyone on newsnight was damning about the safety compromises and failure of someone to act on a cross party groups recommendations, the more I think it's a national disgrace.

I'm more angry about this than the recent terrorist attacks because by all accounts , had advice been acted upon, it was preventable.
