You subtract 3 for our win and another 3 for Swansea's loss. Our win would also put Boro to zero so, with Sunderland already at zero, we'd have three teams who can't catch us. Simply, you subtract from the MN every point we earn AND every point dropped by the other team. We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

After today's results, the MN is reduced to 4 and Boro are no longer a factor.

The nice thing about Magic Numbers is that they move when other teams drop points. If you're breathlessly looking over your shoulder at Hull and Swansea, take a gander at this: 17 Hull 6 Boro can no longer catch us either, so that's two. The Swans are on a knife edge now, in that they cannot afford to lose another game - the MN being 4 but, the GD is so far in our favour that it's really 3. Hull are stuck beneath us if we beat them (subtract 3 for our win AND 3 for their loss).

Magic Number got 2 closer even though we lost as others have suggested. Attachment: Theoretical Safety.jpg (114.96Kb)

Hull's loss means our MN over them is reduced to 3. Next Sunday is now HUGE!

MN against Swansea remains 4. This will be the longest week of the season. A win next week means absolute survival. A draw means we will scrape it. Respect the draw and snatch the win!

A draw against Hull is now all we need to stay up. If we draw next week we will be 4 points clear of Hull with one game to go.
