None of our managers could get the best out of Gayle even though he was our top scorer in every season while with us. He was given a number of chances, but not consistent enough and struggled. Shame he was our best finisher, but was never our top scorer in the Premier, most goals came in the cups. It was never in question he would thrive against Championship sides.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I wonder if the many people saying that Gayle is only any good in the Championship are the same people constantly clamouring for Murray to come back

I remember us trying Gayle as a winger, and midfielder and he was pony. Great striker, good eye for goal definitely, but realistically, not suitable to our needs, and every manager at Palace seemed to agree. I still think he'd do very well in the premiership playing off a target man. I also think he'd have worked alongside Beneteke or Wickham in that role. But we don't have the quality for 3-5-2 and our midfield is generally too light to regularly for 4-4-2 In a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 he's your man. In a 4-5-1 set up, he's not what your looking for.

If we could play two strikers up front, Dwight would've been great. A top prem team with two exceptional CMs would allow this. But most other prem sides like us need 3 in the middle to cater for the speed of some of these attacks. So therefore most teams aside from the big guns, play one up front. Even Watford this year are trialing this as the other sides have susses their strike partnership from last season, Leicester too it seems. Its the way the prem is atm. Newcastle may go up, but if they play two up front, they'll get thrashed. and when they play Dwight alone, they'll not keep the ball up half enough.
