In these days of nonsensical 'political correctness', it wouldn't surprise me if the the pilot was a woman and instead of thinking about how to successfully navigate a plane she started thinking about shoes, what to cook her husband for dinner, kittens and make up and then smashed the Airbus into a mountain.

Very sad and shocking.

Isn't there a theory that the missing MH370 is also pilot suicide?

Yep, one of them had a flight simulator at his house so it was a strong line of suspicion.

Not unusual fro pilots (apparently) also if he was planning on topping himself practising landing at various airports was arguably pointless.

They recovered data from it of him practising flying into the Indian Ocean.

Really? I didn't know that, still don't understand why you'd have to practice crashing though. I reckon that even I'd get that right first time

Afraid so. More likely practising how to avoid detection, or how to shut down systems, than the crashing part.

But to do that, wouldn't you need an actual simulator (ie the big physical mock up of the plane cockpit). I can't imagine people having those in their house.

I wouldn't imagine so, so long as the simulator data is up to date. The shut down procedures could have been mocked up (role played) as he'd know where they'd all be within the actual plane itself.

I don't think he needed to practise the crashing part, as you say we've all crashed MS flight simulator enough. Maybe he practised doing it without any passengers figuring out what was going on though?

Optimistic as ever

Makes you wonder about MH370 again though doesn't it?

This type of suicide is relatively common amongst pilots, I remember a couple of instances.

I was listening to an expert on Radio 5 and he reeled off a list of 5-6 in the last few years. His take is that many were ignored as they weren't in western Europe / USA.

He may have no religious nor political affiliation but still is an act of terrorism in all but name. Like Breivik kinda.

Not really sure you can call it terrorism if it doesn't have a political or socio-political agenda. Breivik was very much politically motivated, even if he was a mental case, by far right and neo-Nazi ideology. In Breviks mind, he was 'fighting a liberal leftwing conspiracy', and he left a rambling, manifesto

Terrorism is effectively an attempt to exert political influence through the use of violence and fear of violence.

Terrorism, no matter how heinous, is indubitably about making a statement and getting those you wish to sit up and take notice do so.

It wouldn't surprise me if this German fella did this in a pique of love angst or employer rage and, thus, was also making his own warped statement.

One can call it "Suicide" but actually it is mass murder.
Absolutely terrible and the families and friends must be going through is sheer hell. My thoughts go out to them all.

I agree. He took these people out and that's unforgivable no matter how you feel about your own life. The terror people on board must've felt.

It is what the industry calls it, just adhering to fact, not something seen much on General Talk.
