Clarkson plays his cartoon character very well (and very profitably) - that of fat, balding out of condition middle Englander who's dress sense doesn't stretch beyond Next catalogue. He's cultivated a persona as a cardboard cut out, stereotypical unapologetic xenophobe trading on cardboard cut out stereotypes of everyone and everything else. Edited by The Sash (11 Mar 2015 1.01pm) If possession of this dubious set of attributes is sufficient to qualify one to be described as "talented" then I can only say God help the entertainment industry.
Although I do find him funny and irritating in equal measure. What he is is different from the acres of beige woodchip on legs that seems to be the world of Television presenting..he's a cartoon and a cultivated persona and I find it quite funny that people get taken in by that A television world totally inhabited by Phillip Schofields is to horrific to contemplate, whether you love or loathe Clarkson Edited by The Sash (12 Mar 2015 8.44am) The main problem I have is with the man himself. I agree that you should have personalities that challenge and provoke discussion and that's always going to be divisive. For your Pip Schofield I have Matt Baker....so when his saccharine grinning face looms I just turnover. I understand you have to have these shows as they do have an appeal to many as does Top Gear. No interest personally. A car gets me from A to B, some faster and in more comfort than others. But Clarkson's a snide. If you've got something to say to the Argentinians about the Falklands then stand up and say it. If you want to take the piss out of a Burmese man for being Burmese then do it so we can all understand it. Underhand, cowardly and juvenile. He does though doesn't he. I have seen and read far worse from Clarkson than his 'slope' dig (I knew what it meant). Everything from the Chinese as having no souls to Jade Goody being a 'racist waste of organs' to 'America: 250 million w****rs living in a country with no word for w****r' Nobody jumped up and down then. Why now ? So he's a snide - so what ?? Like I said - no flag here for Clarkson but the (faux?) outrage he seems to provoke bemuses me.

Does he? Did he call an American who could answer back a w****r or insult Jade in person etc Or did he do it on camera to be aired at a later date or write it in a book? I genuinely don't know. For the record I'm not outraged at all. I think he should lose his job if it turns out the only provocation for clumping the bloke was that he served a cold platter of deli meats rather than an Argentinian steak. If he stays on I'll turn off as I always have and continue to dislike him from afar. No skin off his nose nor mine. As for not liking snides, I suppose it's my own character flaw. I like 'stand up' people.

I like 'stand up' people. Well no, that's all to camera or in print, but that's not going to make him unique is it ?? Or should people with opinion, regardless of what it is only make them 'face to face'? I have a theory that a bit like Thatcher - Clarkson has become a bit of a litmus test for some of peoples 'right-on' ness quotient and that to like him categorises someone as a UKIP supporting misty eyed nostalgic loon and to dislike him is as trendy as a George VI bearded Hoxton hipster. The rest of us seem just to go meh...life is to short to worry about the flaws and virtues of the TV presenting classes personality traits...they only have one prerogative and that's to be entertaining - and there are precious few who do it well.

Unless we are now starting to equate that the systematic and covert enabling of child rape over decades at the BBC is the same as someone getting a right hander in the canteen in how the BBC should conduct is internal disciplinary procedure?

Edited by The Sash (12 Mar 2015 11.04am) No, that would be impossible. But surely after 3 decades of insults and derogatory provocation you'd think he'd have the decency to at least once be in the same room or even the same country as the person he's insulting? Anyway I think I'm learning.... Jeremy Clarkson / 30 years of empty provocation = all mouth 'n trousers = meh. I'm cured. Edited by fledgling (12 Mar 2015 12.04pm)

"The rest of us seem just to go meh...life is to short to worry about the flaws and virtues of the TV presenting classes personality traits...they only have one prerogative and that's to be entertaining - and there are precious few who do it well". I had understood you to be suggesting that we ignore personality flaws in our TV entertainers and simply focus on their worth as entertainers. And,of course Clarkson isn't remotely in their league flaw-wise,but as a general principle it'd be interesting to know precisely where the line should be drawn in terms of people ignoring flaws so long as someone is a good "entertainer". Good question actually legal, the Celebrity/Entertainment world is full of people who have been forgiven by the public at large for a fistful of actaul crimes, and yet they still have their jobs. I mean take Stan Collymore as an example full on wife beater, and yet he is a popular media figure in footbal. And the list of stars that have been caught snorting the devils dandruft is as long as your arm. But most if not all still have careers. strange...

Edited by legaleagle (12 Mar 2015 12.19pm) I guess you did or I patently wasn't clear enough, given it was in response to whether Clarkson is 'snidey' or not and wasn't related to the various criminal activities of the stars of the BBC. He could be the snidiest barsteward this side of London or a human being full of warmth and generosity - neither that important - they aren't paid (by us) for their off screen personalities and theres a distinction between personality trait and criminal behaviour- Clarkson being snidey, smug and up his own arse isn't yet a criminal offence (although if it ever is Piers Morgan will be looking at 30 years to life) Drawing the Line ???? Ainsley Harriot taking homes pens from the set of Ready, Steady Cook isn't as bad as Clarkson thumping someone which isn't as bad as Saville f***ing children on the set of Jim'll Fix it and I guess the line is 'flexible' accordingly. Trouble is people tend to be selective with their outrage and don't apply common sense - Collymore as raised by Danny a perfect case in point.
