To confirm : my statement is that he will not be one a proven premiership striker. I wd love to be proven wrong, but let's wait and see. Saying he cd become like a new Defoe is crazy. Defoes positional sense, running off the ball and ability to lose his marker, has been brilliant for years. It's what's made him the player he is. Gayle seems a good finisher but that's it. I have no idea what he's like on the training field, but unless he is incredibly dedicated and hard working, I dont see him catching up in the areas he is lacking in. But that is the hardest part. Running channels and losing a marker can be taught. Having a sniff at goal and being able to stick the ball away is worth a lot more as you either have it or you don't. I think Parish summed it up in his interview, the price tag, hype and expectation was all to much for a guy who was playing non league 2 seasons ago. A season being in the Prem and training with decent coaches will have boosted his confidence and with a decent pre-season and stronger team behind him, next season he could flourish. His goal at Villa and the way he brought the ball down and went past Ferdinand at Utd. showed me enough to realise he has enough about him to be a top player and certainly capable of getting double figures in this league. The biggest factor for me is whether our style of play and formation will suit him enough to achieve it.

We might all be eating our words come next season. I'm going to go on record right now and say we won't. Way too far behind in basic football intelligence, positional sense, off the ball runs and work rate. If he was 19/20 I'd say he's a prospect. At 24 it's just too late. Wd snap hands off for 2M. I'm going on record now to say that Gayle will have a big part to play next season & you'll all be glad we kept him.
Me too, Tony Pullis is not trying to make us another Stoke and think we may see more of players like Gayle and Joniesta.

And on 20k per week, how long do you continue to hold out for a players potential? If he was a local lad thru the youth team on 5k pw then great, keep him at the club as back up and to provide a but of pace off the bench. But given we have already paid 4.5m last Summer, and 1.5m this jan (got this on v good authority), plus approximately 1m in wages, it really does look like a shocking bit of business.p
I get the impression the cup half-full'ers were also the ones that thought Holloway was doing a good enoughd job throughout his tenure and should stay when it was obvious - to some of us anyway - that the team were under-performing.

One thing that's interesting is just how divisive Gayle is in terms of opinions. We have a few players whose popularity is somewhat "mixed" but with most of them -- KG for example -- many of us can see both sides of the coin. But where Gayle is concerned, most of us are firmly in one camp or the other (he'll develop or no, he won't). Not much point repeating what I've already said about my own view though I admire the faith of the pro-Gayle camp because there is certainly no real physical evidence to support the belief that he will become a Premiership striker at this point in time. Anyway, the summer will be revealing; I am genuinely fascinated to see whether we stick or twist.
Gayle Played about 20 games this season, all bit part appearences at the end of games scored 3 goals 2 open play and 1 pen Scored against a top 4 side and scored the goal of the season for us he clearly has ability but has been rushed from non league to the toughest league in the world. Don't get me wrong, I agree about gayle but no idea where you get your stats from regarding Murray but they're completely erroneous - murray's played 20 games? I'll have what you're smoking.

How many players do we have on the books that play absolutely no game time but still take a wage home every week? Gayle plays, sporadically and mainly from the bench granted but that is far more than some others at the club and his goal that got us 3 points at Villa contributed to another season in the league. Players generally peak at 26-27 so Gayle still has a lot of time to improve and if he nets double figures next season is he still going to be a shocking bit of business?

Some people forget how far he's come in such a short space of time. That improvement won't stop, and TP is looking forward to working on him in pre-season. He's going to be great for us.

We've gotten away with it this time because we are staying up. I would imagine investing in a player that they knew full well could produce the goods in the Championship should we go down yet was young enough to potentially adapt to life in the Premiership should we stay there. I don't think giving Gayle 9 months and then tossing him onto the used pile is fair or reasonable.

If we do sign a couple of strikers (proven at the higher level) then Dwight will be possibly 6th choice. Unfair on the lad to keep him imo if that transpires.

That's football. Same happened with Wright's replacement Gabbiadini. We were right to cut him loose early. If we do sign a couple of strikers (proven at the higher level) then Dwight will be possibly 6th choice. Unfair on the lad to keep him imo if that transpires. Of course but I doubt it will. I also think that Gayle would prefer to stay with us and actually benefit more due to feeling wanted and having a regular home instead of being shipped off again to 4th club in 3 years. Comparing the two there is a bit strange, for 1 Gayle was not a replacement for anyone. Second, he was definitely bought as a rough stone to polish and Marco was the finished article replacing a very prolific striker. None of us know what Pulis plans are for Gayle or if he rates him or not, I would say that judging by the fact he makes the bench and has got game time then he is still in his plans and he is slowly getting him used to life in the Prem.

Murray returned from a 9 month lay off with a truly horrific injury, into a side shy of goals in a division he's never played. Entirely wrong to judge him from those appearances. After a full pre season and a good run in the side, fair enough. Not worth mentioning til next November IMHO.

I'm just an old cynic Been following football way too long. I do hope it is one of those very rare occasions that I am wrong. I'm not though.
