Since justification for the restrictions was to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed, that is the measure that matters. If we abandon the timetable (21st June) on the basis that some unexpectedly bad thing might happen in the future then, by definition, we are giving up on ever reopening. There are forever going to be variants, mutants of variants, mutants of mutants of variants and all that pilaver. Politicians in thrall to doom-mongers and the knock-on effect of continuing restrictions is quite horrendous. Edited by Willo (06 Jun 2021 9.31am)

It's a huge big con job. If vaccines don't work, lock downs don't work and masks don't work what's the point. It's a scam............

The beauty of Johnson & Hancock scheme is that “freedom” is linked to having no variants of concern so bang on time the “Indian variant “ pops up, testing is massively increased, PCR sensitivity adjusted to create more “cases” and surprise surprise we need to be cautious and delay the unlocking. This can be done effectively for ever and people still believe them... Take a look at Texas & Florida - no lockdowns, masks, SD, full stadiums for sporting venues and no issues?

Whilst virus case numbers are increasing, which was expected, hospitalisations and deaths remain stable thanks to the success of the vaccination programme which has been a huge success. There are always going to be variants and mutations etc etc and politicians cannot be in-thrall to doom-mongering scientists and advisers who would have us locked down for ever.We are falling into the trap of an unattainable 'Zero Covid' strategy. Most people dying of smoking have smoked for several decades prior to illness or death so it's not really comparable to the spread of a virus or how to act during it. Realistically hospitalisation and death numbers are the primary important factors to keep an eye on with covid, rather than case numbers, so it's certainly relevant. So far in this department things are looking good (due to the number of people vaccinated).

How long it takes is less important than how many die within a time frame. Any number of obese people are allowed to eat McDonalds or any other fast food seven days a week if they decide to. Alcoholics can go to the pub, diabetics can eat cake. I should imagine the deaths from heart conditions created from these actions are huge every year....much higher than for a virus that mainly kills the already ill. If the idea is that huge numbers of people are dying of something and that it must be tackled then questions on past policy are there to be asked. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Jun 2021 6.28pm)
