Who have we been linked with we would say are marquee players?

Maybe Bats, but he would only be marquee based on his salary.. even then theres no strong links.

I dont think anyone is advocating we return to the days of buying players like Benteke and Sakho. Once Wilf, (just assuming hes going), Sakho & Benteke are off the payroll we will have more room for manoeuvre. Until then expecting that Palace can deal at top performing players at Championship level I dont think is too much to ask.

The point is some fans on here are only happy when the club pay huge amounts of money for what seem to be amazing players. And the other point being made is that we have been there and done that and it hasn’t helped the club in the long term. Spend wise...that’s what the club have to continue to do.

Not so sure people really want vast amounts of money spent on players, it's just that with 2 years or so of very low spending, we now have a very ageing and small imbalanced squad.

Positions that have been neglected like attacking midfield and another forward will likely cost more money. We perhaps have to spend 'the going rate' as freebie 30 year old's aren't going to help long term.

It's either we invest now or accept that we are likely to go down and start from scratch. I can't see us surviving with what we have. We'll be going backwards with already older players another year older.

I certainly would like to think the board know they have to spend this window. However, I suspect we'll trying to be doing last minute haggling and miss out.

Do we even need any "marquee" signings? I suggest what we really need is a balanced squad in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts - in other words a team and not a collection of individuals whose egos might get in the way.

At present we need more firepower up front and attacking options from midfield (a young CB wouldn't go amiss, but we can get one of those in a future window).

Our recent additions have done well for us at minimal outlays (in PL terms) - Guaita, Ayew, McCarthy, Cahill, Tomkins and even Kouyate. It's true that some of those are short term fixes but they have played their part in keeping us comfortably in the PL. I suspect we will get a couple of more short term fixes this window but am hopeful we will pick up a couple of younger players with a longer term future in mind.

It's so easy to waste money in the PL for minimal results (think Spammers, Everton, The Weed, Bournemouth, Villa etc.)

Spot on.

We CAN improve our squad without being reckless - Quality is key Cahill shows that we shouldn’t be too focused on age and price tag.
It’s crazy to overlook players that could come in and do a good job for us because they are over 28 years old!
They key for me is where we spend the money it should be on players who can create and score - and have a. A point to prove having been on the bench at a bigger club elsewhere Or b. Have the potential to improve and develop.

I am frustrated by Roy’s unwillingness to be more proactive, change formation and mix things up when it’s not working. BUT here we are with another season in the premier league - so let’s put it into perspective. We played some decent stuff last season at times so 4 or 5 decent additions and moving on a couple of players could see us do alright.

Agreed,we should protect the dinosaur in chief as age and experience may just keep us up,being the aim of the board, for yet another season.
Expect no major signings, just experienced players in the form of frees and loan signings.

When did we last have an attacking midfielder in the team? Don’t reply Cabaye as defensive midfield was his position throughout his career.

Good question.

Whilst more defensive, Cabaye could actually pass the ball fairly accurately which certainly helped. He could link with the attacking players.

Currently we seem to have 3 defensive midfielders who seem incapable of anything other than passing sideways or losing the ball.

Our greatest need is for a decent striker (half decent will do !) and a couple of fullbacks. 31 goals in 38 games is pretty pitiful, tactics aside. I agree loans and freebies are what we can expect in the foreseeable future and with it, mid-table mediocrity.
