Man alive, that made me choke on my coffee.

I think we can safely say that Rory Stewart is on the left hand side of the Tories....it's a stretch to call him a 'centralist'.

He would be at home in the Labour party and indeed, currently does a podcast with that criminal Alastair Campbell.

One of the left's greatest achievements has been to move the centre ground to the left. Politicians today that are considered right wing would have been seen as centrists back in the day.

The average Tory member is far more "right wing" than the average Tory MP. This is why the party needs to be defeated soundly. They are simply not listening to their members it's a joke some are called right wing and Nazi when they stand for:

Pro business
Tough on crime
Tough on immigration
Anti big government
Brexit
Strong on defence
Socially conservative (small c)

These are basic Tory values. I do hope that the party now splits the liberals can join up with Lib Dems or Labour and the rump of the Tories should merge with Reform giving the voters a proper choice.

Oh I am! Always have been.

Fiscally very much a hard line conservative who does not believe in running a deficit and postponing problems by borrowing.

Socially more liberal in that I believe the most vulnerable need protection and help whilst all those who can work, should work. That includes almost everybody. Everybody should do something, paid, voluntary, full or part time, to contribute to the health of the nation.

So mothers, grandmothers, grandfathers should all work?

I'd have thought that raising children properly is the best thing they can contribute.

Everything you say tells me that you are liberal/left.
As has been discussed in another topic. You can call yourself what you like, but that doesn't mean that anyone accepts it.

Am I misremembering? Isn't he a landlord who has taken on renters on benefits?

Apart the first duty of keeping its people safe (something I regard as a utter failure both militarily and socially) the main role of government is the economy.

Government is there to create the conditions for private enterprise to create wealth both for itself and its employees....both should result in increased tax takes.

It's all very well saying that most should work...most people of working age do work. The government of the day needs to be attracting firms and businesses that can provide enough jobs for them to live comfortably enough.

Something else that governments of both types have failed at.

Essentially our political class aren't worth their benefits nor wages....Yet they draw them at higher rates than previous much more competent figures of the past.

Short term decisions on energy, housing and basically every other important topic has resulted in a country that is declining..at a disgraceful rate compared to what previous generations had created. And a cost of living crises that deserves far more attention.

I'm sure he sees himself as some sort of saviour, doing a service for the poor.

Nigel Farage might as well have a full-time gig on the BBC the amount he is on there.
