2 x free transfers and the other 2 low end signings that took little imagination. When did we last make a beeline for a player where we have had to compete with others clubs. I'm unsure about Guaita but I would hazard a guess Palace had a free run at the other 3.

Ferguson yes but that remains to be seen. Again will be a low transfer sum for the PL. Having said that we only went for him because Kyle Walk-Peters decided to go elsewhere even after Roy saying we were likely to sign him. Again once another club shows interest we get blown out the water.

Just me, but I have little faith in our recruitment department.

You’re knocking us for getting quality players in for free or cheap?!

Nope. But they should be supplemented by top talent in the PL.

Much rather the club made clever signings over marquee signings.

I think Benteke and Sakho can be described as marquee signings and those two purchases, while I do believe they were instrumental in keeping us up after each one signed, they have both shown that there’s no guarantee of a player performing consistently over several seasons. These two marquee signings have ultimately failed in the long term and that’s bound to have had an impact on the finances.

There are always occasions, when being linked to players and then seeing them sign for other clubs becomes increasingly frustrating. In January I really did hope at the time we might sign Jarrod Bowen but now having seen more of him in the prem and the fat 26m fee I’m so pleased we didn’t. What a waste of money that’s looking to be.

I’m very pleased with the way Palace have been ran, it’s down to this cautious approach that has meant we were always in a strong position to keep Wilf each year and that has been a joy.

I hope Wilf gets his big move and then I hope Palace can find the next star of tomorrow but for a reasonable fee. Oh and I hope we score more goals next season lol

The whole reason our transfers are so limited is because we are dealing with the consequences of spending big on marquee players that we can’t afford. Sakho and Benteke are prime examples. Next to no sell on value and huge transfer fees, signing bonuses and wages that have altered our entire wage structure.

That’s what going after top talent does when you can’t sustain it. The secret to our success is improving our academy and generating talent to supplement our first team and subsequently selling them on. We have the catchment area, we need the facilities and investment to take advantage. Being in the PL will help too so it’s imperative we stay here while the rebuild happens.

Here's exactly what it is.
I've been posting here since 2017 or 2018, we won't be able to buy any "marquee" player until we part company with Sakho, Benteke, and possibly Wilf.
But, the issue now is that if before they had a value, that value is decreasing rapidly, so parting company with them means only cut wages, so now we need to get the money from the academy, as coulsdoneagle wrote, or from clever and lucky cheap buys.

Do we even need any "marquee" signings? I suggest what we really need is a balanced squad in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts - in other words a team and not a collection of individuals whose egos might get in the way.

At present we need more firepower up front and attacking options from midfield (a young CB wouldn't go amiss, but we can get one of those in a future window).

Our recent additions have done well for us at minimal outlays (in PL terms) - Guaita, Ayew, McCarthy, Cahill, Tomkins and even Kouyate. It's true that some of those are short term fixes but they have played their part in keeping us comfortably in the PL. I suspect we will get a couple of more short term fixes this window but am hopeful we will pick up a couple of younger players with a longer term future in mind.

It's so easy to waste money in the PL for minimal results (think Spammers, Everton, The Weed, Bournemouth, Villa etc.)

Agreed, i'd also add Fulham to that from 2 seasons ago. Came up, spent £100m, got relegated!!

I agree. We've been burnt by marquee signings but to be fair we've only signed two in our entire stay in the PL, transfer value wise. Couple this with giving extortionate salaries to other mediocre players which we are now paying the price for. I am not advocating marquee players. Young players such as eze, watkins etc with a sprinkling of experience. I just want some passion, excitement and a return to the palace culture. I know we are burdened by Wilf, Benteke and Sakho, Meyer(as he doesnt play) etc but surely top championship talent should not be beyond. Or heaven forbid we actually have a scouting network to look in the same places as Brentford etc

No we don't, and we should have learnt the lesson.
I was saying that because a lot of people in the forum, Twitter etc keep asking for the striker scoring 20 goals, the attacking midfielder like RLC etc...
So I was saying that to buy those players before selling the 3 we have is impossible.

Who have we been linked with we would say are marquee players?

Maybe Bats, but he would only be marquee based on his salary.. even then theres no strong links.

I dont think anyone is advocating we return to the days of buying players like Benteke and Sakho. Once Wilf, (just assuming hes going), Sakho & Benteke are off the payroll we will have more room for manoeuvre. Until then expecting that Palace can deal at top performing players at Championship level I dont think is too much to ask.

You’d have to add Cabaye to the marquee list. At 10m and his wages at the time you’d have to say that was a huge jump in what the club had been used to spending up till that point.

Good thing is he was absolute class and I was over the moon when we signed him.

yeah possibly right, almost added him. Dont think it was relative in terms of the fee, it was a lot for us though.
