It certainly wasn't sold to the public as such. That's just another in the long list of problems associated with it. Number one for me is that it was not a vote for anything, just against the EU. Until there is a mandate as to what alternatives were available, we shouldn't have had a vote. Or at least, it should have been the first in a series - ie, is there an appetite to leave? Well, that could have been the first vote. At which point the government sets up task forces to see what that could look like before starting the process on any of them. Puts the options to the people - stay, go on these terms. Would have been better for everyone I think.

I think you are correct but the government was so anti Brexit that I'm not sure that we could have trusted them to set up an impartial task force. Even now, we are only hearing of the negative aspects of Brexit but I suppose this will always be the case until we know what, if any, positives there are. I hope that in 10 years time, we will be outside the EU, looking at it getting more and more political and bureaucratic (and expensive) and thinking thank feck that we are out of that and that £50 billion was cheap.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

It's a catch 22 for fervent Leavers. A healthy and prosperous EU will be beneficial to us and a not so much one (so that the UK can say 'Brexit' was the right way) will be detrimental to our economy assuming reciprocal trade deals are done and dusted then. Ideally, it will go well for both. Well that's what we should all be hoping.

Has anyone noticed that Brexit has basically turned our government into (even more) pandering sycophants? In desperation to get a deal with countries like the US, out leaders are forced into doing nothing more than simpering to nations across the world, with offers which will involve a selling off of our sovereignty and our dignity in order to achieve some sort of trade deal, which in most cases will be stacked in the favour of the other side. This is no better demonstrated by May's complete inability to properly rebuke Trump following his racist tweeting and his subsequent slap down of our PM. The fact that she won't revoke his offer of a state visit and that she even made it in the first place is a sign of how insipid and weak our government has become. It's embarrassing and looks weak.

When the Queen goes on a "Head of State" visit, and she's been on a few - I'd always thought that reciprocal invitations were extended by the Queen too.

Remainers will try anything to reverse Brexit. Anything. Ban the president from a low key visit, trade deals, engineer shyte deals with the EU or anyone else. Exaggerate anything else they can find. Anything. Whenever anyone wants to stop something these days it's usually because they're remain.

You seem to regard 'remain' as a badge of identity forged in the womb or something, rather than a considered position that people have thought about. The point is that people who voted remain tend to think that the future will be worse if we leave. Why is that so f*cking hard to grasp? It's not a political front or a way of trying to 'win' - most sensible people want what is best for the country. But there is thin f*cking gruel coming from the leave side beyond 'foreigners are bad', 'it'll be alright on the night' and 'don't like the united states of europe'. Frankly I think I'd prefer the last at the moment, at least decision making might be a bit more enlightened.

If we just leave without due consideration nor being ready for it we will be the arse end of Western Europe again as quickly as you can say Taylor Swift!!
