I don’t recall having my fingerprints taken when entering the USA but having a photo taken is now quite usual in many circumstances. Retina ID is used on passports. There must be a way of capturing the details of a passport on check in which can then be linked back to an individual. CCTV at the arrival airport can trace someone back to which aircraft they used. Our police already use facial recognition technology. It surely just demands some imagination. They do check fingerprints.

Fingerprints, photo, and maybe a few questions are part of the US entry process, as is an advanced ESTA form completion, now requiring a photo of your passport and details of your online presence. But this is for normal routes into the country not swimming across the Rio Grande from Mexico.
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

It's odd since we've repeatedly been told that Britain has skills shortages, mainly caused by Brexit, but in the last ten years the population of the UK has increased by more than those of France, Germany, Italy and Spain combined.

Not for British passport holders. We participate in the visa waiver program.

My family’s fingerprints have always been taken; maybe because we were staying in the US for longer than the normal fortnight, but they are taken . I assume they compare them with the previous set. I’ll let you know if this changes when I next visit.

You’re assuming that the UKs increase is down to filling those vacancies; maybe they end up in the black economy, or in jobs that are created rather than filled ( think car park car washers etc.)

Those arriving aren't doctors and nurses or if they are then not enough of them are.

I remember having to complete the ESTA and know that some holders of non British passports have to provide biometrics before being granted a visa. I read though that all entrants, including US nationals now undergo electronic retinal and fingerprint scans so maybe I didn’t notice it. I associate fingerprints with ink pads and mess. (Yes, I was fingerprinted in the past. That’s another story.)
