But frequently because they have destroyed their passports and identifying documents just before they arrive, making it impossible to know where to send them back to...

There must be a way to overcome this. They cannot book or board flights without documentation so this can only happen on board the aircraft or on arrival before immigration.

With the availability of face recognition software and the records available at the point of departure it must be possible to pair the two. There probably needs to be some changes to the law, maybe even international law, but there must be a way.

UN shelter hit by Israeli munitions. Scores injured and killed. Not an isolated incident. I find it repugnant that also Palestinians , now deprived of food and water, are now being ordered to travel to the south. And the West just watches and sends more arms.

Do you also find it repugnant that a former Home Secretary described those who protested about this as taking part in “hate marches” and that some here defended and agreed with her?

There are already cases of facial recognition ‘getting it wrong’, particularly with dark faces. In addition you are assuming that everyone who crosses the channel had a passport at some stage of their journey-the whole process could be carried out without taking an ‘official route’.
It’s a nice idea to use facial recognition but it would just mean the legal profession would have another multi appeal process to milk.
A better way would be to use DNA but that would need a global standard being adhered to; unlikely in our lifetime and again a civil liberties nightmare.

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

My understanding is that it is a strategy adopted by those arriving on aircraft, not boats, who won’t need documents anyway. It wouldn’t just be facial recognition. Their clothes and personal belongings could be used as supporting evidence. They cannot dump them down the toilet and walk naked into immigration undetected. CCTV could trace them back and find their stuff, which could then be DNA verified.

Won't happen for a while.

One way would be to take fingerprints at check in linked to their id. So if they arrived at a UK airport a simple check would be sufficient to identify who they claim to be and what flight they arrived on.

The airlines and the do gooders would resist however it doesn't bother me. When you fly to the states they take your fingers prints it's no big deal.

It wouldn't solve the boat people problem though.

The form of protest it always the issue. The right to peaceful protest is enshrined in UK liberties. What i also find repugnant is the way the UK Government has systematically eroded people's right to protest, on the back the behaviour of those idiots from "Just stop oil".
As an aside, I marched with Palestinians calling for a ceasefire in a Welsh town yesterday. All good-natured, and garnered a lot of support and publicity.

Meanwhile, back in Palestine, the slaughter and destruction continues.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) has described al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City as a "death zone" after a visit to the complex.

A joint UN team led by the WHO assessed the hospital for one hour following its occupation and evacuation by the Israeli military.

The team said they saw evidence of shelling and gunfire and observed a mass grave at the hospital's entrance.

They were told it held the remains of 80 people." (BBC website)

Doesn’t make sense to me. There must be a way of using the technology in a way which doesn’t threatened the rights of anyone.

I'm not sure quite how it impinges on anyone's rights anyway.
Casinos use facial recognition technology.

I don’t recall having my fingerprints taken when entering the USA but having a photo taken is now quite usual in many circumstances. Retina ID is used on passports. There must be a way of capturing the details of a passport on check in which can then be linked back to an individual. CCTV at the arrival airport can trace someone back to which aircraft they used. Our police already use facial recognition technology. It surely just demands some imagination.
