I suspect we've had it this time. Spot on. I agree and feel the same. Been supporting palace through Noades, Goldberg, Jordan to now, seen us nearly drop to the 3rd tier - I enjoy palace when we are winning and giving it a go, not looking over our shoulder... If all we have from our decade in the prem is a decent academy, so be it - at least in the champ we will be starting more of our own players. The prem is a tricky one... get in it, spend big and compete but never turning a profit if never winning silverware or getting Europe. Get in, take the money and run, riding your luck until kicked out - that's what we should have done. We should have given it a go and enjoyed the ride taking the cash and investing. There was a turning point, with Pardew, Europe talk and buying/loaning players we should never have... that's when we lost our soul... Sam A ws bought in to fix that mess, short term.. he did and Roy was left with the pieces... next up should have been Sean Dyche and rebuild... not PV and a change of style.

Great post all round but thoroughly agree in bold. I'd also add, for me, there seems to be an odd sort of desperation to romanticise about PV and defend him from all criticism amongst some. The worst and weakest argument in the world of 'who else then?' seems to keep coming up which is very bizarre. He's not an ex-player, didn't walk to Palace as a youngster from his childhood home in Anerley, doesn't really exhibit any close connection with club etc. It's quite embarrassing and odd, as though we should be grateful for his mere presence at our club due to what he achieved as a player... with Arsenal! Talk about an inferiority complex and misplaced loyalty. When Wilf is gone I really do fear for our 'identity' and that synergy between our players/coaches and fans. Just does not seem to be there anymore, even before we endeavoured to produce the worst run in PL history. I haven't seen anyone defending him from all criticism. There have been some like me that have taken a pragmatic position and said that if you looked at the fixtures since Christmas which ones have we lost that you wouldn't expect us to and the fact is Fulham is probably the only one and maybe Villa. We almost beat Brentford. The rest of the games getting anything would seen as a bonus. I think Vieira needs to be braver in the games against the bigger teams, but unlike Roy he does put out attacking players like Eze when we play teams he considers at our level. He does need to improve our attacking play, but we're not alone in that boat. See Wolves, Southampton and Everton for their struggles in front of goal. I still maintain the fixture list screwed us this season putting a lot of pressure on the run in, but compare ours to all the other teams below us and you have to say we should stay up. Regarding the position of "is there anyone better?" Well, that's like saying I really like Olise, but I'd swap him for another winger who scores more and creates more if they wanted to come to Palace.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - dropping back into the championship with 15k gates of “true” fans is all romantic cobblers. We need the money from the PL, we’re not doing a very good job with it so can you imagine life without it..we’d be in league one before you know it. We need to stay up but I’m not sure this team can do it and that is all down to Parish, freedman and the board. They provide the funds and appoint managers. It’s too late to change the PV who’d touch us…so Parish will get his ultimate adrenalin rush if we manage to stay up and I just hope it we can do it as relegation will be a complete disaster. Speaking personally my support of Palace is not contingent on what division we are in.

There was literally a thread created called 'PV in' TL where one user went on to slate the players and call all those criticising PV 'idiots'. It's quite the post actually and immediately conjured up the image of someone enjoying therefore going a bit too far with a liquid lunch for me. If you haven't seen that or any other examples that's fine but I have seen quite a few.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Personally, PV has some credit in the bank with me because last season was probably the best football I've seen in decades at Palace, but definitely in our current PL run. It showed what he could achieve with the right players. Before the WC people were talking about a possible push for Europe and since then we have struggled to lay a glove on the big teams, but we matched Brentford and, until the red card, looked as good as Villa. We have a win percentage of over 60% against the teams below us this season and respectable draws against Liverpool, United, and Newcastle (twice). If we were losing feebly to Southampton, Bournemouth or Leicester, for example, then I'd feel differently, but I still believe when we finally get a more favourable run of fixtures we'll get points on the board and attitudes will swing back the other way.

Its been a terrible run, we can all see that. And some of the football has been terrible. But lets try to be pragmatic, there havent been many games we should have won on paper, and the draws of late have all been against good teams. Lets not be one of those teams who sack at the slightest big of trouble. We are still 12th

Edited by HesHereHesThere (13 Mar 2023 8.11am) we don't 'need' to stay up. That is equally cobblers. I don't want us to go down but it's inevitable at some point in the future so get used to it. Relegation sucks, it always does, but it's not the end of the world. All part of the cycle and certainly a big part of being a Palace fan. It's just that some newer fans (and that's in no way a criticism) haven't experienced it yet! Hand on heart I've had more enjoyable experiences in the Championship/old first division than the Prem. And part of the fun is chasing the Holy Grail.

You kissing goodbye to in excess of £150m in broadcasting and sponsor revenue alone if we are relegated and I expect all our good players to have ''get out clauses'' built in to their contracts as they will not want lower league football. The club's value will plunge overnight and this will have a negative, on how we could continue to fund the academy and any future development of the stadium. I was disappointed in my younger days when we finished in the bottom half of Division 3 (South) and were then founder members of the new Football league Division 4. However for me anyway, being in the EPL for last 10 years has been the most exciting period in this clubs history, seeing the best players and teams in the world coming to Selhurst Park is just exceptional any way beyond my dreams when we were in Division 4. We have to do whatever is necessary if it is at all possible to keep our EPL status. It looking increasingly possible that we may well do that as taking the latest results over the weekend in to consideration, the relegation final spot will be around 35/36 points and we should be able to scrap 38/39 points at least, finger crossed.

Yes we've had some good times in the championship and one of my favourites was being on the pitch after beating Blackburn...but those moments were very few and far between, no way do I want to go back to the sh*t we had to endure under Burley, Francis and Freedman (pre car park talk from Parish). I can't believe some people seem to have forgotten about just how sh*t that was.
