Yep, the current scenario cannot go on any longer.

1. The manager's contract expires at the end of the season. He will be 74 at the start of next season. Will he realistically carry on again ? He is already the oldest ever top flight manager when he reached 71.

2. Our squad is really starting to age now. Players are getting into their 30's rather than reaching 30 now. That's without all those out of contract.

The club are in situation where things simply can't carry on.

I would expect us to survive again this season, and maybe reach mid table status (10-12). But come the summer we will be in all sorts of problems if things are sorted out soon.

Otherwise we will be a typical Palace situation of searching for a new manager in the summer, then trying to get new players in (which we are not particularly great in sorting quickly).

Some valid points,Roy deserves to enjoy his long deserved retirement and cannot go on for ever!!
Thomas Frank at Brentford is getting some notable success and of course,we still have Eddie Howe out there somewhere and understand SP talks highly of him.
Time to prepare for the end of Roy's tenure in charge at the end of this season.

With the important January transfer window coming up ,Will SP give Roy the funds to do business? Or wil he get a fresh manager in for the obvious rehaul that is needed to an ageing squad ? I think the latter .

January is not the window for an overhaul of the squad.
Maybe one in, one out but little more than that.

Given our current points total there is absolutely no reason to replace the manager at this stage either.

Once Roy gets us to safety, I would like to see him start introducing some younger players from the under 23’s. If he does that I am more than happy for him to carry on next season.

At the moment we have not got the right balance with old experienced heads and young talent.

Unlikely imo. I expect there to be some money for a young CB if the one we have been chasing is available at the right price. Perhaps one other youngster in if the price is right etc.

If the youngsters were under 21 as at 1 Jan this year then they can be included in our first team squad without having to exclude existing members. However, I do wonder as has been said on another thread today whether Batshuayi will be looking for another loan move so as to try and get more game time.

As for Roy, make of this reply to a question what you will:

"I still get as much pleasure from watching the games of football and in particular from training and preparing the games as I've always had.

So all the time that that lasts, there's no reason for me to consider leaving it behind because I know that when the day comes, when I do make a decision to leave the game behind and to not give myself the benefits of training every day, having matches every weekend, I'm going to miss it."

I interpret it as saying "As long as I can still hack it as a manager on the training ground etc., I intend to carry on managing a football club".

So, basically, if he wants to carry on next year and the board are happy with him, Roy will still be our manager. The only thing in my book that might change that scenario is relegation and I do not expect that this season.

In the scenario whereby we remain in the PL and Roy Hodgson is at the helm at the end of the season, I suspect the hierarchy will wish him to continue and if he still wishes to do so then he will be our manager next season.

He will have ensured survival for 4 seasons on a limited spend and the sole objective is to remain in the hallowed land of the PL so I cannot foresee the 'Board' wishing to make any changes.

I agree. Overhauling squads is expensive, unpredictable, and can lead to unrest.

Ferguson would only make one or two changes each window. The most important thing is to spend the right amount on the right players.

Allardyce signed 4 players. Two of them left backs because we had none in the squad. Souare not have had an accident it would have potentially only taken Sakho and Luka to achieve a significant improvement in performance.

Even Sheffield United could start turning round their run of narrow defeats with only 3 successful signings.

Plus there's no room in the squad.

I just don’t see Roy walking.
So the more pressing question for me is will SP look to the longer term future ( if there is such a thing in football these days) and appoint a more dynamic and pro active Manager? Again I don’t see that either.
I think we’re stuck with what we’ve got. The silver lining is that we have a decent squad (not that it couldn’t do with a freshen up starting with Sakho. Wickam and Dann) and we have played some good stuff in spells - in particular 1st half against West Ham.

I was hoping Howe might be introduced to the set up - but think that unlikely now. I think Dyche is a great fit for us - and with the squad at Palace I reckon he’d have us playing the type of football we enjoyed under Sir Steve the added bonus would be that without Dyche Burnley go down - so one less place to worry about!

Is this a Palace supporters web site? Most contributors seem to hate the club and everything that is being achieved. They seem to have the same expectations as big rich clubs so go away you lot and support them.

You should see what other fans say about their own clubs, this is pretty easy going on here...

Back to Roy, he stays that’s ok by me. You watch the Premiership manager merry go round once we head into 2021.

Potter the PE teacher down at Brighton, the UBER is on its way along the coastal road!
