Yep, the current scenario cannot go on any longer. 1. The manager's contract expires at the end of the season. He will be 74 at the start of next season. Will he realistically carry on again ? He is already the oldest ever top flight manager when he reached 71. 2. Our squad is really starting to age now. Players are getting into their 30's rather than reaching 30 now. That's without all those out of contract. The club are in situation where things simply can't carry on. I would expect us to survive again this season, and maybe reach mid table status (10-12). But come the summer we will be in all sorts of problems if things are sorted out soon. Otherwise we will be a typical Palace situation of searching for a new manager in the summer, then trying to get new players in (which we are not particularly great in sorting quickly).

We have gone from a yoyo club to a "treading water" club, which is a vast improvement, than any period of 52 years supporting.

As with all the ' Roy Out ' threads and sentiments, it all boils down to this ; 1. The Club has little short term ambition other than staying in the Premier League. 2. The Club has been underinvesting in the squad in comparison to the competition. 3. Hodgson's methods have been proven to achieve PL safety. So if I was in Steve Parish's shoes, I would have little or no appetite to change the manager given that he delivers on #1. and makes do with #2 and #3 is the compromise. I can't make a case for Roy providing edge of the seat thrilling football. But I can make one for the pragmatic approach he employs that keeps Palace in the Premier League and him in a job. I agree with all of this. I'd like to add though, that I do wonder if the club are preparing for his inevitable retirement. There should be s predecessor put in place or at least a coaching team in place to take over from him now, so there's minimal upheaval when he does leave.

Yeh, it’s Ray Lewington a mere youngster at 64.

This is interesting however, Roy can’t do anything about his age and the transition of changing an old squad to a younger one isn’t going to happen overnight. Also, why do so many people make the assumption that if our average squad age is drastically reduced, this is going to equate to a sudden upturn in points? Experience counts for a lot.

There is no point writing good honest common sense on here, they just keep on coming back with utter trash.

I’m afraid many of our defensive and midfield frailties arise through a lack of pace and pace is the unfortunate casualty of age. A blend of youth and experience is required, our balance of the two leans more toward the retirement home end of the spectrum.

Ironically, I think we are now playing the best football since Roy has arrived and we have improved tactically, so I’ve definitely cut back on criticism since the debacle of the Chelsea and Brighton performances. The cracks are there for all to see however and we are going to need some highly flexible filler very soon.

Of course we need to replace a few older players with a few younger ones, but that's a long term, gradual process. Eze and (hopefully) ferguson were a very good start, as was the promotion of mitchell. I don't want any more than three unproven players introduced in one year if possible, and all the while we can eek another season out of the older ones we should do so. It's evolution not revolution. If we can get a promising 20 year old centre back then that's great, but even better to have him learn from Cahill over a year or two as one is phased out by the other, rather than replaced. I'd certainly hope Ferguson is already picking the brains of Clyne and Ward, whilst also setting himself the target of overtaking them both. Roy is another matter. If he's fit and able then he can stay until he's 80 for all I care. He's a good coach and a good man. The players like him too, and they wouldn't suffer a fool.
