Looking at all our results this year. I think we've been awful, but very lucky. We've had an extrodinaty amount of last minute goals and a fair few reds against us. The only convincing win we've had this season is Burnley away. Looking at our last 10 fixtures. Southampton (L) That's 9 points from a possible 27 and knocked out of the cup to a lower league team. Out of the teams in that list, only 1 is above 9th place. We havent scored first in any of those games, 4 of the points we won in the last minute and 1 against a side with 10 men. The more I look into this season the more frightening it seems.

Watching Southampton tonight I was trying to imagine our players passing like theirs were and just ended up laughing. We've got a team that's no good for anything but Roy's functional style - and the worrying thing is that we're paying the players a ton for it, not developing any young players, and have an ageing squad. Our time in this league is ticking away unless recruitment is sorted.

Yep, nailed it, although anyone who can play a bit of football doesn’t get a look in, or Freedman and/or Parish wasn’t to buy them when Roy has no intention of playing them.

Like he hasn’t played Tosun, Guaita, McCarthy, Cahill, Meyer, Batshuayi, Riedewald, RLC, Zaha... The problem is not simply one of Hodgson being stubborn or dimensional (if ones buys that), it is our long term recruitment. We have a distinct lack of effective squad depth at full back, a player like Cabaye who could tackle and pass, as well as up front. For many games who is Hodgson meant to bring in? He has been tasked with guaranteeing survival. When he had players like RLC and Bats he has played them. We even played really nice football when we had players like that, but we have not brought in players like that long term. The back up we has is effective but largely functional, as are many of our first eleven. Add that to their age and we have a team that look knackered when asked to play more than a game a week, and little toon ability genuinely to rotate the side (assuming Hodgson would do that).
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

With the number of players who can travel with the ball injured and the imbalanced teams we’ve been fielding the surprise has been the number of points we’ve nicked over the last few weeks rather than result tonight. Kelly has looked vulnerable in recent weeks and my main criticism of Roy would be that he didn’t put Ward straight back in. I don’t think th3 ten points we need to stay up are a given and the owners need to sort their lives out and get some quicker players in who’ll bring some intensity and quality. Even with a fully fit squad, RH would still set up at home with 3 defensive mids, because that is what he does. The proof is in the pudding.

Roy repeatedly asked for the club to buy players in the positions we needed cover for and the club didn't do that in the summer and when the injury crisis loomed he was forced to put round pegs in the proverbial square holes. With only 20 senior outfield players we then lost between 6-8 of them to injury during the last 8 games or so. Despite this we have only lost twice in 11 games in the league, albeit many of them draws. It's easy to complain about Roy being negative but the squad is small and imbalanced and there are no obvious changes you can make with the personnel we have. Players such as RLC and Bats did well on loan but we need quality permanent signings. Hopefully last night's showing will scare the Americans into realising their investment could be at risk if they don't allow us to spend.

Sorry but people calling for Roy’s head are ridiculous. 2 seasons ago we had a (at the time) french international in his prime at centre back. And England & French international in midfield. Aaron Wan-Bissaka & Fosu Mensah battling it out for right back. And Hodgson has us playing some of the best attacking football under that 442 system we’ve ever played at Selhurst. And it was Roy who oversaw that. The Leicester win epitomised it. At the start of the season, anyone would take one look at the 11 we’re fielding at the moment and say we’re in serious danger. And yet we’re not. We’re 4 points off United in 5th. Have safety in touching distance. And just drew 2-2 with City at the Etihad. This is all a result of Roy Hodgson. We’re not playing great but what do people expect? The point is, Roy is good at utilising what he has at his disposal. What he has at his disposal is really not all that. And whatever you wanna throw at him, he’s had next to no investment since the day he walked into the club. There is no manager currently available who would do a better job than Roy. And the comparisons with the Pulis’ and Allardyces of this world is just a total insult to his entire career. He is much more than a geezer who just comes in to keep us up. But until the club has more fund available to spend, I honestly have no idea what you’re expecting. We’re lucky to have the guy.

But whilst we have a squad of reliable bruisers + Zaha. Reliable bruiser football + Zaha running at people is what we’ll get. Shame about Meyer, but he doesn’t fit the 433 which many were screaming out for. He could’ve taken the left midfield position in the 442 Roy used to play. Easily. He's played the same way every game since we played Man U in the 3rd match of the season. Injuries are down to an ageing squad and lack of subs. He's had years to sort that out, but hasn't because it would mean taking a risk. When you see how well Reidewald has played it makes you wonder why he hasnt given him or Mayer of Camarasa a run in the team? Or why Ayew didn't get a look in last season. Even Sorloth is now top scorer in Turkey (with a better record than Cenk had).
