My immediate reaction is trade embargo until they pay compensation. Trouble is, they own too much of us and are too strong for us too.

So if it’s ok to label it where it first happens then surely there is nothing wrong with saying it is the Chinese virus that mutated into the South African, Brazilian, etc etc virus? Or are you suggesting it originated elsewhere? No anger, just want to get facts right. I was just about to ask the same. There is no disputing this started in China, I suspect some months before the Chinese admitted its existence. They have got off very lightly in my opinion.

Calling it the "China-virus", rather than Covid 19, was a political act. No-one calls it the "English, South African or Brazilian-virus". They are referred to, quite correctly, as Covid 19 variants, without attaching blame. That Covid 19 first emerged in China doesn't mean that China is to blame. Finding out how it emerged and whether any changes are needed is what the WHO are now doing. Then if blame is deserved it can be given. Edited by Wisbech Eagle (03 Feb 2021 3.50pm)

In the same way German Measles was first identified there.

I had never thought about why German measles were so called so looked it up. It seems that using the description then was a tribute to the physicians who first identified it as a separate disease in 1814. Rather different from seeking to attach blame. The only person who repeatedly used the description "China-virus" was Trump and he was obviously doing so to deflect attention from his poor response and find someone else to blame, as was his standard modus operandi. That some don't like to acknowledge that as a fact doesn't mean it isn't true. The primary reason that anyone now uses the term "China-virus" is because of Trump.

Rubella was first identified as a separate illness in Germany. I don’t believe it was unknown before that though, so no evidence it originated in Germany.

Well, the original origins of the Spanish flu aren't known and are contested. I've heard of strong claims for China with it as well....viruses from China are common. However, large numbers died early on in Spain and that's why it gained its name.

That's not the point....viruses are named after the places they first appear to come from...the reality may be or not be different.. ..so as you said to another poster. Whoosh. German Measles is a different strain and was first identified in Germany. Regardless of it’s origin it was called German Measles because of that.

This is the problem: one is named as a tribute, the other as a slur. But the outcome is the same.
