All this talk about Roy and his negative tactics yet our shots on goal to date totals 447 for the season with 3 games to go, this puts us 7th out of the 20 clubs. The teams above us include 5 of the top 6 and Leicester.
Our highest recorded total is 476 which was last season under Roy.
We’ve also hit the woodwork 15 times which is the 4th highest this season, again the only teams above us are those that are in the top 6.

When you consider these stats and then cast your minds back to the opportunities the players have missed in games at home, Sakho’s missed header against Newcastle, MacArthur tap in against Watford, MacArthur again when he missed from 2 yards out. Take your pick of any player against Cardiff. A few of these go in and there would be a lot less disgruntled home fans wanting a change.
Key moments at home we have come up short and I don’t see what Roy can do, other than set the team up like he has done and hope his players have their shooting boots on.

Spot on, we just haven't had that much luck in front of goal whilst IMO playing decent football for the majority of the season.

You do realise there is only so much Hodgson can do from the sidelines? - that is to pick the team, tactics, coach and motivate.

It's not Roy's fault that strikers are missing good chances. Was it Roy who told Tompkins to slip against Brighton? The crucial match winning moments are down to the players, not Roy.

We are 12th in the table, well organised, tight defensively, players look up for it, performances have been good (not results at home), we create chances. We're in a great place with Roy and long may it continue.

Seems the team selections, tactics, and ability to motivate are a bit lacking at home this season eh?

Must just be a coincidence that player's make individual mistakes at home but not away from home?

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.

Absolutely correct, 100%.

Half the time.........

When we are away, we often see some of the best of our players.

We don’t at home.

Roy’s wealth of experience has presided over a very poor home record this year, with players massively underperforming.

Football is defined by small margins. The stats don't back up your relentless criticism of Roys tactics. We have had the 7th most shots in the Premier league, same position as last year. Previous seasons in order we were 20th, 15th, 12th and 12th.
The difference is, we have hit the woodwork 15 times, say 50% could of gone in with a bit more luck, the season at home would look different. I don't think anyone can justifiably blame Roy for hitting the woodwork.
You need to accept Roy isn't going anywhere, why would Parish consider letting him go, he is good at his job. The risk of change is too high, FDB fiasco would stop him drastically changing.

I am not sure, why you are so concerned at home performances, you don't go to matches, so either winning at home or away makes no difference. People with season tickets I can sort of understand.

As sad as this is (nothing better to do this afternoon) , I’ve worked out the stats myself using the BBC match stats for the season. This is of course not entirely accurate on ‘missed chances’ as I have simply used the ‘shots’ statistics. This gives no indication towards how good the chances actually were. It’s the best I can do, but I feel it’s a fair representation to support my argument.

Home: 17 games, 269 shots, 14 goals.
= average of 15.8 shots per game, 0.82 goals per game. 5.2% of shots are goals.

Away: 18 games, 185 shots, 29 goals.
= average 10.27 shots per game, 1.61 goals per game, 15.67% of shots are goals.

The above includes the following highlights:
31 shots, 0 goals vs Cardiff (home)
29 shots, 2 goals vs Burnley (home)
5 shots, 3 goals vs Man City (away)
7 shots, 4 goals vs Leicester (away)

We’ve had 50% more shots per game at home than we do away, yet we have scored double the away goals. The conversion rate away is 3x better than it is at home.

My point is, we are creating chances at home which means Roy’s home tactics are working. Roy can’t be held responsible for sticking the ball in the net himself, the players have to do that.

The majority of people can understand this but sadly Mr Maine for whatever reason cannot, maybe he feels he will lose face if he just admits he has got it all wrong and Mr Hodgson is doing a damn good job with the players he has to work with at home and the actual results are down to the individual players misses and mistakes at crucial moments.

That could be a solution, but if a team comes to Selhurst looking for a draw, which they usually do, you'll end up with two teams sitting back, 0-0. That's when fans will really get frustrated.

I think what we're doing is right, we just can't get the crucial first goal, the whole pattern of the game changes in our favour after that (we can then sit back and counter attack).

I'm no master tactician, but the only other way I can think of is to keep the ball, play with width and find space/wait for a mistake when the opposition tire, although this is more of a top 6 tactic and I don't think we have that quality.

Agreed, good post

Eaglecoops, I do agree with your logic, except I think it is more down to the balance of our team, away from home we get more space because the way we play the breakaway, this suites us more as we do have fast forwards (Wilf & Andros), both of these players have good ball skills and they can score goals its our strikers that have let us down this season and when we are at home the game we play changes because teams drag us in to coming at them and whilst Wilf and Andross have less space to work with they still manage to put in a fair few good crosses each game but alas the so called strikers we have do not have the skills to attack the ball in the box or work defenders off the ball to create space and opportunities for others. I think Roy's tactics at home are limited because of the poor form of our sick note prone strikers in fairness to him. These strikers in the main are more SP choice than Roy's. Lets hope now that we are safe we can have a pro-active transfers market and get the teams balance right well in time for next season so that we can use the training period in the summer months to get the team to gel better, have a good summer!

Yes, all fair points and I agree, we do need a well thought out summer transfer window consisting of goal scorer, creative midfielder and left back.

At home the dilemma we have to overcome is about our completion from dead-ball situations on a positive note and our tendency to make a defensive mistake from a negative note.

The way many other teams score against a defensive minded opponent is to score first from a corner or free-kick and open the game up. With our preferred first team, no Dann, no off-form Benteke, Milo our best dead ball option, our team is incapable of benefiting from the corners and free-kicks you gain with ball and territory.
Can we buy the solution?

Defensively we are losing the first goal regularly through silly mistakes. Can we coach this out? Do we need to move on from PVA, perhaps Sakho, goalkeepers?

Until we sort those things out our home results will continue to be poor.
