Fantastic deal for both clubs, plenty of money to replace him with a quality or promising right back. Let's go get Max Aarons for 20mil, he'll be worth double within a year. Put the other 30mil into a striker and the squad has already been improved.

Unless we are in financial crisis then I hope that at least this puts to bed any idea of Wilf going. If they have retained a 20/25% sell-on fee then I think that is the difference between someone being able to afford him and not. Wilf angled for a huge 5-year deal last season, so he is not really in a strong position to complain and I hope that he is happy to stay. I imagine a club would have to offer an absolute bare minimum of £75 million given the clause and what we held out for with AWB. As much as I'd love AWB to stay I still can't my head around £50m for an inexperienced rightback with no full England caps. If the reported wages are true then you can add about another £20m on top of that. Good luck to the lad as he is going to be under the microscope the moment he steps onto the pitch.

I think people are forgetting we made a 35M loss. All these ridiculous posts stating that we lack ambition etc etc. We're not a top 6 club and we can't even break even with the huge wage bill currently so of course we had to accept that offer

Edited by DeanMiles (26 Jun 2019 12.13pm) They simply would have calculated an expected fee and knocked off 25% of that from the fee for AWB. It’s the same money just paid at a different time. This way we get the cash we need sooner. Also maybe we never sell Zaha - a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. Edited by Maine Eagle (26 Jun 2019 1.08pm)

A lot of good has come out of this - not least that the Zaha 25% sell on is now openly in the public domain. That means Parish can openly stand his ground on the basis that "we can't replace Wilf for 75% of what you're offering". Someone would have to offer expected Zaha replacement cost PLUS 25% for Parish to want to accept it. The only way Zaha leaves now is to let his contract run out (4 years)

Well, looks like it's definitely happening. I love watching AWB and I'm gutted that we won't see him achieve his full potential in a Palace shirt, but for a club in our situation, a £50 million right-back is something of a luxury. Hope he does brilliantly at Utd but I'm already anticipating the press and their dreadful fans putting every little mistake under the microscope. AWB might wish he'd had another season to develop with us, but eventually I think he'll become one of the world's best. I hope the recruitment team has been looking hard for a reliable replacement, and the management team realises what can be gained from trying out youth players every once in a while.

Let’s we forget, he would have got nowhere near the first team without a massive injury crisis. Let that sink in. We just sold a kid for 50 million quid and he only got a run of games through luck and happenstance rather than the skill of the manager. Hodgson literally had no other choice than playing the best right back from the academy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that a sell on fee is only for anything above what we paid?

And please don’t answer with loans because for every Batschuyai there’s Sanogoal’s and Bumfluff’s. So what would YOU do? I tell you what. If we make a couple of top signings and finish higher in the table than this season I will be he first to say that the sale worked out. However, you cannot replace a potentially world class defender if you are a team like Palace. I hope everyone enjoys watching AWB making good wingers look ordinary for United next season while Ward gets done by quality most weeks.
