It seems unlikely he’d join Palace considering he doesn’t need to rush and will have bigger clubs after him eventually but he is also the joint favourite with a bookmaker. So it’s not even remotely comparable to Pochettino or Tuchel. Agreed that Nuno is not comparable to those others, that why I said he isn't in the same bracket as them. Where he is similar is that he's out of our league. Not by the same distance as Tuchel et al, but out of our league nonetheless. I think we need to learn from the players we have signed in the last ten years. First and foremost they have to be good enough of course. Even if they never get any better than they are the day we sign them, they still need to be able to do the job at hand. Beyond that, if they are hungry to step up and are not being given the chance somewhere else, that can go a long way. If they are well thought of as a big club player, and just want an easier life by moving to little Palace then we won't get the best out of them. Cooper, Frank or Ishmael could be the coaching equivalent of Bolasie, Jedinak, Delaney etc, hungry to prove themselves and willing to give everything to Palace to do it. Nuno is fairly hot property right now and will expect bigger and better options than Palace. If he signs for us he will soon be underwhelmed at the step down he has taken, and be the equivalent of Sakho, Cabeye or Beneteke. Technically better than what we had, but without the end result to justify the expense. Lampard or Howe would be the equivalent of that player who had a big reputation, had a lot of fuss made over them, but then hit a setback and found that not everything was rosy in the garden all the time and that the spotlight moved on very quickly. Allardyce used to seek them out when at Bolton - top-level rejects looking to prove people wrong. I wouldn't rule out a big name whose stock is high at the moment, but my instinct is for someone with something to prove. Edited by TheBigToePunt (28 May 2021 10.23am)

I agree with most that Nuno is a good manager and we’d be punching if we secured him. The thing that would concern me most about that is the likelihood that (assuming he did a good job at Palace) he’d very quickly be linked with “bigger” clubs and wouldn’t hang around for long. As a Palace fan I hope for some loyalty from those we bring to the club - I know that is a bit of a forlorn hope these days, but there are some out there that present less of a risk in that regard. Of course it’s also important for SP to ensure the environment is right to support the next manager and help him achieve his own realistic ambitions which hopefully tie in with ours.

Oddly enough the only Palace manager that jumped ship for a bigger club under the present regime was Dougie Freedman.

In fairness, Allardyce left pretending to retire when he plainly had no intention of doing so, then took the Everton job when it came up. Not quite the same as Freedman actually leaving for another club I appreciate.

Dowie? ME did specify 'under the current regime' in fairness. If we remove that filter, the list of managers to dump us for someone else might be a long one. Bassett? Edited by TheBigToePunt (28 May 2021 1.25pm)

Based on nothing whatsoever, my hunch is that Parish & Co. may make an about-face and surprise us with a relatively unknown who's hungry to prove himself on the biggest stage. Someone relatively young who will gladly energize the club and stay for a minimum 4-5 seasons without being tempted to take on the expectations of a top club.

So it's a straight choice then Pullis or Alladyce.
