Just a few candidates...
John Salako (Salako was so nearly my first child's middle name - born the week before he left Palace)
Vince Hilaire - who I saw win the Youth Cup with us at Highbury (did I really used to go to Youth team games too?)
Len Chatterton - top groundsman with a natty line in VW beetle grass rollers
John Burridge - for the handstands
Nigel - for the tache
Rachid Harkouk (if only for the bent fivers)
Paul Hinshelwood (a vision of blonde ineptitude)
Ian Dowie(simply a vision of beauty)
Doogie (because of Stockport)
Aki (for the website)
Alan Whittle (am I developing a worrying thing about blondes?)
Peter Taylor (for the waddling runs down the wing)
and tops
Kenny Sansom - my first real hero, and the first victim of my stalking. Sorry for hanging around outside your house most nights that year Ken...

(I reserve my right to come back for more after another pint)

When I first started watching Palace back in the 3rd Division South, there were the players like Alfie Noakes, Len Choules, Andy Smillie etc but the one that was always head and shoulders above the rest was Johnny Byrne. He was the best and huge crowds used to frequent Selhurst Park in those days I'm sure, just to see Johnny Byrne. I left England in 1966 (cup-final day) & have missed seeing the likes of Ian Wright, Geoff Thomas, McGoldrick etc. but I must admit Lombardo sounds like he was something special.

All told then, probably Byrne, Lombardo and Wright would have to have been the best and this guy Ronnie Rooke must have been a useful player getting a fistful of goals in his time when Palace were really a c--p team.

I throw in Jack Blackman as well, a great servant to the Palace both as a player and as a trainer and then they gave him the big heave hoo, I think it was Malcolm Allison and he ended up at Millwall in the days of Harry Cripps and Eamonn Dunphy.

Never saw Rooke or Jack B play but half a dozen of us used to play brag every Fri night round JB's place opposite The Beehive at Woodside Green back in early 60's. Bloody hell, I go on, but you support your club thru' the good times and the bad times as you go down life's path.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread....

Aki - he's on my list because of his personality - great guy

AJ - Enough said (and that hat trick vs Brighton)

Nigel Martyn - Possibly the best signing this club's ever made

Ian Wright - The Cup Final and I like his TV style

I would stick Geoff Thomas in, but I never had the opportunity to see him play.
