Saddam's elite forces are firing on Desert Rat positions outside Basra using Iraqi civlians as a human shield. Yeah, I heard they stationed the Republican Guard artillery pieces in populated areas. Not surprising, given they know how paranoid we are about civilian deaths. Another easily foreseeable problem coming home to roost, I fear. Equally disturbingly, British Royal Marines have moved into positions along the Iraqi border with Iran, amid worries that Iran might try to exploit the chaos caused by the war.
Strewth! That's incredible. Still, it may work in our favour in the long run -- if other Iraqis find out about it. Poor b*st*rds. Sure enough, this just in from the Beeb... Popular uprising reported in Basra. British troops said to be firing into the city where Iraqi soldiers were shooting at civilian protesters. Better news at last.

Although the BBC are now saying that it's not clear if there was an uprising at all...meanwhile in the USA Fox are reporting that Basra has almost fallen and that Iraq TV is off the air.

Still unclear whether or not there was an uprising. Hopefully it can be fairly bloodless if it does happen. And Iraq TV was off for about 3 hours but is up and pumping out its propaganda again.

Likewise, I've not heard any more on the uprising in Basra. Iraqi officials say a busy Baghdad market has been hit in an air raid. Staff with Reuters say they have counted at least 15 burnt corpses next to three badly damaged buildings. Presumably this is a result of the B52 raid this morning.

Yes indeed. A different perspective entirely.

What I find interesting is that organisations like Al Jazeera clearly link the Iraq and Palestine situations... something which the US tries its hardest to avoid, for obvious reasons.

A large convoy of about 70-120 Iraqi tanks and armoured personnel carriers - is seen moving out of the southern city of Basra, heading south-east; coalition aircraft are said to be preparing to attack them. And in spite of the large numbers of civilians killed in earlier bombing raids and missile attacks, explosions continue to be heard in and around Baghdad. This just keeps getting worse. And no sign that the supposed uprising in Basra -- the only thin ray of hope so far -- is actually real.

"Umm Qasr is a city similar to Southampton", UK defence minister Geoff Hoon said in The Commons yesterday. "He's either never been to Southampton, or he's never been to Umm Qasr" said one British Squaddie on patrol in Umm Qasr today. Another added, "There's no beer, no prostitutes and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth."

Some major battles going on in Southern Iraq today. Expect heavy casualties on both sides. And stories coming through -- unconfirmed, as ever -- that a massacre of tribespeople by Iraqis has taken place in the Kurdish enclave. Still no more news on the Basra uprising. Looks like another one of those stories that was never actually true. We shall see.

So the Americans are calling up an extra 120,000 troops to Iraq, and they're claiming that they had planned to do so from the start. Bollox! They should admit that they were completely thrown by the support for Saddam and the resistance in Iraq. Not everyone capitulates in the face of American greed and bullying, be that for better or worse...
