I'd love to be wrong, but it looks like Southgate will guarantee another failure this time around. I told my son we would defend a 1-0 lead for the rest of the game, and we did. Our substitutions were laughable, and Arnold is no more a midfielder than he is a defender. He then takes off Arnold, who is actually a good passer, and puts on Gallagher who isn't, playing next to Rice who also can't pass. We then resort to hoof ball. My Chelsea supporting son was begging for him to put Eze, Wharton ,Palmer or Gordon on in place of Foden, who did nothing, Arnold and Saka. This tournament is going to be very dull, and short, if we play like this every game. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (17 Jun 2024 10.06am) I have a horrid feeling you may be right Hrolf. Wasn't pretty was it?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Yep there is nothing there. Just hope that one of the better players pulls out something good. And against lesser oppo, they normally do. Its been the same for his entire tenure. I really struggle to understand any of the media's appreciation of his work. We huff and puff against the average teams, and almost always lose to the top teams. '22 '20 '18 So in the 3 past tournaments the only win against a traditional big team was Germany in '20. So dare I say we'll win the group, will the next, and go out to France in the q final. Nice summary. I've been of the same opinion as you; overrated underachievement. Incidentally in 2018 we actually lost twice to Belgium, so an underwhelming 3 wins out of 7 matches is all you need to get an MBE or whatever it was he got. Edited to add that in Euro 20 we did of course draw with Italy, not lose, similar to saying that in 2018 we drew with Columbia.Even so, your conclusion is still valid. Been saying this forever. Germany the only big scalp of his entire reign. And this was a Germany who were going through the beginnings of a rebuild, and not the imperious force we have come to love/hate) He came in, brought with him his youth team from his previous gig, and where we played remarkably similar, the youthfulness provided vigour, and hope. We appeared to have progressed - by being able to convincingly beat the lesser oppo. but since the last tournament, we've lost that again. We've always lost against the first decent team we've played - but occasionally we get lucky and win one of these games. I have no inkling that this is even a possibility with GS. Our playing style is 'Unjustified Arrogance'; The idea that because we have all these amazing players, their quality will show through and we can beat anyone. Tactics be gone! All managers since Hoddle have simply looked at the english players and thrown all the 'good' ones onto the pitch, hoping for something to happen, no plan, no ideas, but using the buzzword 'Patience'. I'd be seriously looking at Klopp after this tournamemnt. at least he has a recognisable style to implement.

I think it's a bit early to worry too much. In 2016, France beat Romania with an 89th minute goal, Albania with two stoppage time goals and drew their 3rd game and won the tournament. Argentina lost their first game of the World Cup to the Saudis. At this stage against awkward teams that want to defend, the win is all that really matters. Serbia didn't create much and whilst the attack looked really clunky in the second half Denmark should be a better measure of where we're at. We should've taken another left back - that much is obvious. Mitchell would provide far more value to this squad as an option than having all 3 of Dunk, Gomez and Konsa. I'd have brought Watkins on at the end to have a counter attacking out ball. Sitting Kane in midfield with Bowen virtually at right back and Mainoo as a quasi-forward was bizarre and can't be allowed to happen again. Hopefully we learn from the game management and a full 90 of control in the remaining games in the group.

Careful applying that much context analysing an England game, we are the exception and should walk every game 5-0.

Be careful it's not just a sarcastic dig EDN at those commenting on football EDN, it's somewhat the point on this forum. I'd say it also negates any observation on our performance last night. There were some world class players for us out there; Kane, TAA, Foden to name a few, that didn't look anywhere near representative of what we've seen of them in domestic competition, regardless of the result. Tiredness, nerves, personal circumstances, lack of familiarity with one another or the consistency that comes playing for their club team may well play their part but surely it's fair game for discussion without attempting to mock people for doing so?

Hey, you may be on to something there as a radical new England tactic; don't even try to score unless the oppo does so first. Are you perchance open to a job offer between the end of this tournament and (say) the end of the next World Cup? Edited by YT (17 Jun 2024 3.49pm)

I'm not sure how my post could be interpreted as having an issue with people commenting on the football - that seems a strange suggestion. Yes, it certainly wasn't a perfect performance, but tournament openers rarely are for many of the reasons you mention. I think the extensions from accepting it as a sticky 90 minutes to 'everything this team has done in the last 10 years is overrated' are where things get silly.
