Oh dear POG, i feel for you, i really do. Wales have got what they deserve 17-29 FT Poor handling, poor line-outs, poor . . . well, everything. How you cheer up Mrs POG, well, good luck. Thanks eagleman, there's certainly an air of despondency hanging over our gaff this evening. The bottle of Penderyn which was to have been used to celebrate is, instead, being drunk as a form of medication. An anti-depressant. The euphoria of being 10-0 up was soon forgotten in too many penalties, poor line-outs and sloppy passing as you rightly say and there it is. In Mrs POG's own words 'Oh well, it's only a game'. You and I, and everyone else on here, know all about that eh? Edited by Palace Old Geezer (14 Oct 2023 6.51pm)
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Ireland fluffed their lines too. Now it all rests on England to get through later.

I was prepared to give rugby a watch last night, particularly as wife's from Cork. However I was dismayed by the appalling standard of commentary on ITV. Sounded like a bunch of technicians chatting away to each other in the pub, no attempt to explain what's going on to the millions watching, most of whom presumably like me, have no idea about penalties, rucks, mauls, 50:22 (what the f's that,?!!!) And don't get me started on what's going on inside the scrum. At one point the Irish no 12 kicked it straight to the All Blacks who then scored a try, which seemed to me a schoolboy error but none of the commentators even mentioned it.I didn't even know Ireland had been awarded a penalty try until I read it in the match report today.Rubbish commentary but enjoyed the passion and commitment from both teams.

When I was at school the ref would blow something up and we only knew which way the penalty went due to the direction his arm was pointed. Now with millions of rule changes you just have to look at the blank expression on the face of the player being reprimanded to know he has no clue why. The ref might as well be explaining string theory in Hebrew. So what chance us. If a player kicks the ball from anywhere in his own half and it goes off the field after bouncing inside the opposition 22, they get the line out. 50:22.

What goes on in the scrum, "the dark arts", is a standing joke with commentators and is mentioned in most games. Even when one of the pundits is a former prop they still won't tell.

You know it's a penalty try because the referee not only blows his whistle and raises his arm but runs across to the posts. Until not long ago conversions had to be taken even though a penalty try was (and is) deemed to have takn place in the middle, but that wae understandably regarded as wasting playing time. I agree abolut the passion and commitment but would also add tremendous skill. There were some fantastic periods of precise inter-passing and ball-retention and recycling.

Long ago i gave up even bothering to understand the rules of Rugby. the bit that confuses me the most........ is when they hoof the ball a hundred yards forwards and nothing ever seems to be achieved in the action.

Think Fiji will be to strong for the Red Rose, still, N'ton Saints have 5 players across both sides, tho, they lost their opener away to Sharks 20-15. Losing bonus point means we is above last seasons champions who got stuffed/torn a new one by Exeter Chiefs(65-10)
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |
