Can this be moved to news/politics?

Whilst it might have allegedly involved a Palace fan, I thought this section had more to do with footballing matters rather than debating racism, censorship, and people with specific axes to grind with other posters.

The trouble with computers, of course, is that they're very sophisticated idiots

I agree. Crystal Palace fans who have no interest in football.

Nope - an insult is not an insult.

It depends what type of insult, how it’s delivered, whether the person believes it and so on and so on

Couldn’t be any more wrong if you tried

Nonsense.

Clearly there are a variety of insults and they are usually just words.
How you respond to them is an individual choice.

The idea that an insult related to your race or nationality is somehow worse than any other is quite ridiculous.

Believing this is just a fashion or a trend. The law has been corrupted to allow this kind of selective nonsense to prevail and the media eat it up.
Now many accept it in The Emperor's New Clothes tradition because they are sheeple. Commerce is afraid to fall foul of race zealotry because profit is their only concern.

Is that not an oxymoron?

Don't blame people on this site. Blame those who insist on making the alleged yobbish behaviour of one person more important than the football match.

Looking forward to reporting that I’ve been subject to hate crime when somebody calls me a NIMBY…

Nope.

You’re arguing from a dogmatic position and really only through the racism lens - what I'm stating is a simple observable fact. Insults and abuse are obviously not all the same.

I don’t disagree that what the media choose to ignore and focus on should be up for debate… but aggressively abusing someone based on their race, or disability, or sexuality, and with purpose and intent - things they can’t change, is not the same as a gentle ribbing in jest over the choice of an outfit, for example.

All insults are not the same. All abuse is not the same.

I’m amazed this is even up for debate.

I enjoyed ripping the p*** out of two youngsters who called me a gammon as I walked past. It did nearly come to blows though so I backed off then.

Great fun!

How unpleasant an insult is depends on how the victim perceives it.
A confident person will not care too much about an insult but he might decide to use it as an excuse for a song and dance.
A fat person might be deeply upset if they are called fatso or lard arse and a short person might be seriously distraught at being called shorty. They also might not. It's all about the individual.
Someone called a race related name or heckled with stereotypical abuse might react one way or the another.

None of this means that we should keep taking racial insults more seriously than they deserve.
No decent person shouts abuse of any kind at anyone. That is rather obvious.
What kind of abuse they use is kind of beside the point unless some zealot want to score political points out of it.

It seems to me that we have an army of dozy White people who want to take offence on behalf of everyone else.

I'm hopeful that this wasn't racist abuse. They can't just take the players word for it.

Unless there are independent witnesses it will be impossible to charge him.

My friend was accused of racist abuse by a steward. We have sat in the same seats since the Holmesdale was built, some 28 years.

All 3 of us were ejected after "discussing" the matter for nearly the whole of the second half. The smug steward, who we had never seen before, had a big grin on his face. None of the other stewards backed him up. I wiped the smile off his face when I said I would pay for a lie detector test which we could all take, including him.

His face was a picture.

When he submitted the report he changed the wording to verbal abuse and persistent standing.

The club tried to say that they were not taking it any further.

We did!

We had a meeting with the stadium manager and it turned out he had been moved to our area as it was quieter. He had done the same thing before and he did the same thing to us within 45 minutes!!!! He was one of the contract stewards who a lot of supporters had issues with. He is no longer employed at Palace.

You’re parroting subjective gibberish simply to support an ideological position. Regardless of your ‘belief’ the objective truth remains - all insults and types of abuse are not equal.

It really is very simple.

Provides some balance. You should have taken the club to task

However - there would have been plenty of independent witnesses around you, on match day. Much like there will have been for this incident, especially as whatever has been said would have been shouted loud enough for a player on pitch to hear.

So by the sounds of it, whichever way it lands, the truth will out.
