Isn't that proportional representation like you've been recommending as a better system? It is. There does though seem to be a very large number of parties involved which must make the subsequent negotiations and compromises very difficult. Whether that means that introducing thresholds to make that process easier and quicker is justified is a reasonable question.

The fascists have really shown themselves up on this topic. Deary me, what a mess they have got themselves into. How so ? Is it the fact that illegal immigration and the want for it to be sorted out is a top priority for a lot of ‘normal’ people? If that is your marker to being a fascist then your bar is very low indeed.

Wilders’ party did not win a majority! They topped the polls. Very different. I hope the government that forms does listen to the will of the people. Most don’t want Wilders. Most don't want whoever tops the polls in just about every election everywhere. The "will of the people", as you put it, will produce a leader that most don't want either.

Is true but at least with PR compromises have to be negotiated so that some form of consensus can be found before a government is formed. That avoids big swings in policy. Not so with first past the post. Extreme elements within a party can take control and once in power affect major changes. Which have to be undone once they get replaced, as they always do eventually. This has hampered our progress throughout my lifetime. We would never had suffered Brexit under PR.

We would have never joined the EU in the first place under PR either.....or the common market or whatever it was called back then. Edited by Stirlingsays (24 Nov 2023 8.53pm)

PR seems to prevent communists, fascists whatever gaining control through the back door. Sweden, Italy recent right gains are hardly any different in practice, we are not talking nazis etc. As for immigration, the right, as in the UK, is a spectacular failure. 'Plus ca change'.

You just can’t resist can you wissie No one ought to ever forget the most heinous act of damage suffered in our country in our lifetime, inflicted on us by con artists and weak-kneed politicians. After the Covid enquiry ends we need another to look into Brexit. It would be just as revealing and valuable.
