Can we survive in the Well it's a good question but on what other basis would you suggest we try? Buying premier league players at their peak is certainly beyond our means - we'd lose out to the big 6 everytime. Buying aging established players is almost as expensive since they still command a premium in fees and salary and cannot be sold on. Edited by maddog (16 Aug 2023 10.21pm)

Liverpool are set to sign Japanese International and Stuttgart captain Endo for £16m. Plays in Dacoure's position so may have been told that no chance of signing him this summer by Palace. Especially as Endo seems a short term solution.

Olise £35m, but Doucoure £60m. It’s a strange world.

Very few weaknesses in his game that are important for his position whereas Olise has obvious ones (goals, his right foot). If he were to go for £70m, it'd be fine if we had Tyler Adams in the same day by activating his release clause of (a reported) £24m. I think Adams is a slight downgrade but it gives us a lot of cash to sort out our clear gaps up top. Liverpool are being linked with so many midfielders at the minute that it's hard to say Doucoure going is likely.

Endless Newsnow chatter does not a transfer make.

If Rice is worth £1000000 then , in my view Doucoure who is a better player , is worth that plus more .

I'm probably in the minority here but I'd say Doucoure is a good player who we would miss, but not a great one we couldn't replace. Thinking only in financial terms, I would be prepared to reject good but not great offers for Eze (for example) because his value will only increase over the coming year, injuries notwithstanding. I wouldn't say the same about Doucoure. The Doucoure situation is not dissimilar to the sale of Wan-Bissaka in that, if, Liverpool really are going to offer very big money, it might be a one-off opportunity to make such a profit. AWB has apparently done enough to make United offer him a new contract when 12 months ago he was unwanted, but even so I doubt they consider him £50m well spent. If we'd have held on to AWB in the face of the United bid, we'd never have got that size of offer again. Some trains only come through town once. Liverpool are desperate for a holding midfielder, they didn't plan to lose both Henderson and Fabinho in the same summer, and they've lost out to Chelsea in signing either of their preferred replacements. If ever we could name our (inflated) price for Doucoure, it's now. In fact, it's probably now only. The idea that we could build a team by developing young players who we keep together was always nonsense. We have always been a selling club, we just didn't have many players other clubs wanted to buy before. If we are going to develop and sell then getting over the odds for a player, even when you didn't plan to sell him yet, is a significant consideration.

We will, though, clearly need to bring some players in before the window closes and I expect that to happen. With Lerma in situ, and if Doucoure did go for (say) £60m (the purported click bait price we've placed on him), we have Ahamada who, IMO, has generally looked decent when he's played. He is, after all, one of the youngsters we bought with a view to developing and selling on in future at the right price.
