For someone who loves to garner attention it seems somewhat ironic that you are so against virtue signalling. I mean, you literally felt the need to publicly highlight that you are unhappy with people publicly saying they are unhappy with something. You need to toughen up old boy. Stuff some copies of the Daily Mail down your trousers for protection. As it is I haven't really noticed much in terms of gestures, but I have enjoyed the football by and large with even the 0-0 games being generally entertaining. I'm looking forward to seeing Brazil tonight as they have a real box of fireworks in their attack. With the greatest of respect this is total and utter piffle. In the final analysis I am entitled to express my view about the 'Virtue signalling', gestures and protests which have infested this World Cup. Edited by Willo (24 Nov 2022 3.57pm)

Edited by Willo (24 Nov 2022 3.57pm) I never said you weren't entitled, I just pointed out the irony in you complaining about people complaining. I get tired of the majority of this forum constantly complaining about wokeness and virtue signalling, so I am here as spokesman for the anti-anti-woke brigade. Your complaining is becoming tiresome!

One can complain without 'Virtue signalling'. I thought the whole point of 'virtue signalling' was to align yourself with a movement/cause so as to attain attention/praise as you fail to achieve it elsewhere? 'Wokeism' too for me is not complaining it's the actual fabrication or gross exaggeration of circumstances, often where not appropriate, to push one's own agenda/ideology. Quite different from having a good ol' moan about such rhubarb!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Watched the US-Wales game. The officiating was terrible. Too many fouls called, and the penalty foul was a disgrace. It was the Welsh guy who fouled the US player. You Brits better watch out Friday. Throwing your press clippings out onto the field scares no one. Lok what happened Argentina and Germany. Is that all Brits or just those Brits whose team is playing the USA, who are generally known as the English? Sorry to tease as I realise that geography isn't the average USA citizen's strong point.

I think the most vocal elements of both sides of the culture war are similar in how annoying and preposterous they are. You're choosing not to watch the World Cup because of perceived virtue signalling while on the other side people aren't watching it because of Qatar/FIFA. Maybe you could all get together and watch re-runs of Till Death Do Us Part. Anyway, on football matters, a great goal from Richarlison last night and Brazil looked like they barely got out of first gear. If they click (and Neymar plays well unlike last night) then it is hard to see beyond them to win the World Cup as their squad is formidable.

Returning to the football, of course on paper Brazil possess a talented squad but as Brian Clough remarked, football matches are won on grass and not on paper.

Iran players half-heartedly sing their anthem. One of their players has 'love me for who I am' tattooed on his forearm. 'Virtue signalling' from a country where people get killed for doing it.
