Why is it bizarre? The kick fooled the entire Everton defense, everyone in the ground, the tv camera crew and everyone watching at home. The only person it didn't fool was Wilf who was aware of what might happen and was prepared. If Messi had done that there'd be bunting strewn all over Thornton Heath clock tower and all the way up the high street. We're not 4th division any more, we have class players and such players do incredible things.

I mean bizarre is the polite word.

It fooled the entire defence , everyone in the ground and the camera crews because it was an accident, obviously.

If Messi had done that, everyone would still be calling it a fluke, because it so clearly was.

Dear boy I think you're confusing 'intent' with 'outcome'. It might well have been a mis-cue, although many people on this site would disagree with you, but the original point centred around whether he meant to do it as part of a tactic, something that happens in training and is considered worthwhile. Of vourse it looked clumsy, eccentric things always do.

Much has been said about our third goal against Everton. It's been described as lucky because Michael Olise mis-hit his shot and it rebounded off the post. This followed an earlier, similar, attempt and which to me looked somewhat like a top-spin lob in tennis which dips violently and stays in court. So was it luck or skill? I'm sure he knew exactly what he was doing. This boy looks incredible to me.

The two shots were in the same area, similar angle... I believe he has been practising that specific routine in training. The first flopped big time, the second was on target.

This was once a quality forum....

The outcome is irrelevant in terms of whether he meant to slice the ball like that - intent is all that matters. In fact, if the outcome had been the ball spinning wide of the post, no one would dream of pretending he had meant to strike it that way. It's only because the outcome was a goal that such a silly point could be made.

If it was a mis-cue that ended up working out, it is by definition a fluke and you are disagreeing with yourself, dear boy.

The line about eccentric things always looking clumsy is like something David Brent would say.

Pickford was on the 6-yard line. It could have been an attempted lob of it could have been an attempted curler. Olise clearly wasn't trying to hit the post but he was aiming to put the ball just inside the post, out of Pickford's reach.
Could say that all goals scored after the ball has hit a post are flukes, for me Olise tried something special that nearly came off.

I do. I think it was bizarre, but he tried the same thing a few minutes earlier, and I rolled my eyes both times because it looked far from the best option.

How often it will work is another question, but I bet we will see it again.

So without wishing to make this exchange my life's work and within the parameters of banter and light-hearted fun, my point about eccentric things looking strange is entirely right. Half the balls Shane Warne bowled he invented, the slider, flipper etc., and no one thought the doosra was physically possible to deliver legitimately until Shaqlain Mushtaq did it.
Many, though nor all, seem unable to believe that topspin can be applied to a football in this way. Maybe it can't but why be so po-faced and certain when all any of us are doing is trying to control our excitememt at stuffing Everton 4 nil?

I think we would all like to think he meant it. I suspect in reality he didn't.

Only person who truly knows is him. I hope he gets asked in an interview sometime and he gives an honest answer.

If anyone is that interested there are YouTube tutorials on how to put topspin on the ball.

Well Phil, if your flabber is that ghasted, what would it be if we were discussing something that actually mattered? Lighten up and smell the coffee.
