The commentary pointed out something which surprised me last night, (until Leicester beat Burnley) we were the highest scoring team in the PL outside the top 6. Imagine what we could do if one of our strikers could start scoring more regularly!

In theory Benteke and Edouard should be ahead of Mateta in the pecking order.
Benteke has a better pedigree, more experience and is better in the air and hold up play.
Edouard has better control,quicker feet and looks to be the better footballer.
But are they more effective than Mateta?
If you watch the first goal yesterday Mateta laid the ball off to Gallagher near the half way line and then turned and bust a gut to run forty yards to get to the penalty area where he converted Zaha's cross.
For his deflected goal v Watford, Mateta was facing the wrong way but turned and shot instantly rather than attempting to lay it off or try some intricate footwork to work an opportunity.
For the Kouyate goal v Stoke when Zaha got the ball on the right most of the players burst to the near post, but Mateta took a couple of steps back to make space for himself to receive a pass for a shot which he scuffed, but it lead to the goal.
These are game changing moments, which ungainly as Mateta is, one has to take into consideration.
He's by no means the finished article but I'm warming to him.
Benteke hasn't the mobility to play the required role and Edouard so far has shown a tendency to disappear from games, although it's early days and I'm sure he can improve.

When Benteke came on yesterday it sadly exposed his shortcomings. He has no energy. He is very slow and lacks control on the ball. He doesn’t fit into the fast moving high press game we now pursue. This will surely be his last season with us. I’m sure in a different league at his age he could maybe squeeze a couple more seasons. But he has fallen noticeably short of the Premier pace which to be honest he hasn’t had since his Villa days.

Mateta is fitting into the style of play more and more and is a lot more difficult to knock off the ball, unlike Tekkers and Edouard. Although I see a place for Edouard when the ball is at his feet in the box.

You could see against Wolves Mateta links up well with players around him and you can see the other players like him.

As well as being a decent passer when laying off to the midfield Mateta has become the best at pressing amongst the strikers. This effective pressure on the opposition when in possession was clear in both the Wolves and Watford wins.
