Townsend played the best football of his career under Benitez at Newcastle and looked so dangerous cutting in and shooting the way he did.

Maybe they just click as people. Good luck to Townsend if he has a final flourish. We paid him well but clearly he struggled to be both a defender and an attacker with us. And I think that's what we needed him to be.

Some interesting comments about the other players who have left and what they're doing now. Also interesting to consider what players still with us would do next.

Very few of our starters on Saturday (from the Roy era) would be starters at mid table prem clubs or higher. Some would start in the championship, maybe even the lower reaches of the championship.

Maybe some had untapped potential that Roy refused to develop. But when that is the level of your quality, you need to be careful how you play too.

I find it quite annoying that he and Gray are doing well. Absolute bargains for them. Wonder would Gray have considered us, or if we were interested? All academic now I guess.
It was obvious Benitez would do well there at Everton. Plenty put him down, but he seems to do well wherever he goes. I've heard Liverpool fans think this year's derbies are not going to be easy.

Throughout Townsends career he has had short purple patches and longer stretches where he didn't make an impact. That was why Spurs let him go originally, and that was after he was playing well enough to be an England regular. I will be surprised (and pleased for him) if he keeps this up for the season.

As for Roy, wish folk would just give it a rest, hijacking every thread with continuing anti-Roy rhetoric has got really, really boring. He did a great job, he's gone, move on.

Of course that's utter baloney.
Naturally Palace are playing better , they have better players now.
They've spent more money in a month, than Roy had to spend in all the time he was at Palace.
And as I mentioned previously, without Roy managing our very under par squad, we would currently be in the Championship or worse.

No, Palace have Wilfred Zaha to thank for that not Roy Hodgson.

I agree some people are being too one-dimensional in slating our old boss. And I agree with those who say he kept us up.

That said, Townsend discussed the difference in how Hodgson and Benitez wanted him to play and his analysis of how that affected his performances.

So I would say it's about Hodgson as much as Townsend and why the haters are out.

That's total hogwash, there were plenty of games when Zaha didn't want to know.

I had assumed the reason Townsend spent so much time in his own half in recent seasons was because he was more comfortable there and didn’t trust his pace and attacking thrust when on the offensive.
He clearly feels from the interview that Roy wanted him to concentrate on the defensive side of the game whereas Benitez has told him to forget about that side of the game and concentrate on being an attacking threat.
I was not a Roy fan in that he seemed to neglect the attacking side of the game even against weaker teams.
What I can’t dispute is that many of the players Roy ignored despite a clamour from many (including me ) to play them have done nothing to suggest he was wrong to ignore them.

Roy did an amazing job given what he had to work with.

Even better when you consider that a couple of the released player who we relied on heavily last season have had to drop down divisions to get a game.

And we’ll never know what he might have been able to do with the money PV has had to spend.

Either way we should be thankful for him for keeping us in the league season after season with a threadbare squad which has given us the platform to push on.

So Andros might be having a purple patch, or it might be that the shackles have been released. Either way good luck to him, he always put a shift in for us.

Yes of course all the best to Andros, and I'm sure he'll get a great reception whenever he comes back to Selhurst Park.
But of all the players we let go, he's the only one wanted by another Premier League club, and that is a reflection of the quality of player Roy had to work with, while keeping Palace completely free of relegation worries.

You seem to think we wouldn’t of been relegated if de Boer and Zaha both stayed. Interesting view.

Benitez, can only free Townsend up like that, because he knows, or at least , thinks his mid field and defensive options are good enough to cope without Townsends help.
Hodgson rarely had that security, there were times when he was able to risk ,allowing Townsend as much freedom as Wilf, all to often it back fired in particular in the last two seasons. For much of the time the injury list insured it wasn’t possible anyway.
Hodgson, did what he had to do, if we were to remain in the division, with very little improvement made to the squad. That squad at Everton, has cost four or five times what even our present group have cost, they should be able to cope with having a Townsend ,in the side. We will never know what Hodgson might have achieved for Palace, with more investment in his squad. What we do know is we are still in the league, on virtually no investment in players.. Not anyone could have done that.

It was the 2017/18 season when we had the above mentioned names and Roy steered us from rock bottom with 0 points, 0 goals and no morale after 3 games to finish 11th (our highest finish in the Prem). A few highlights of the season were beating Leicester 8-0 on aggregate and 0-0 against the unstoppable Man City which we almost nicked at the end. I think 'fantastic' is a fair assessment for a few of those performances.

Agree that Hodgson couldn't be trusted with the money but only because of his age and impending retirement. A younger manager was needed to see us through the transition. If Roy was 15 years younger I'd trust him 100% because he's a proven top class manager.

His lack of substitutions towards the end was frustrating, however, did we ever have any game changers on the bench? It was mostly journeyman midfields and defenders making up the numbers. He recognised that we would struggle to score so he had us well drilled to make ourselves hard to beat.

His brief was to keep us up on a shoestring budget and he achieved it comfortably every season. He will go down in history as a Palace hero for successfully navigating us through a tough period. We are where we are now because of Roy. He's paved the way for PV to take us to the next level (before he moves to Arsenal!).

Yes.

I do so tire of the continual putting down of Mr Hodgson.

Every thing you say is spot on. Other managers were told the time of day by Steve regarding expenditure: next to nothing. Hence Pullis and Big Sam walking.

However, Roy took on a job that the others were scared of and steered us to the position we're in now.

What's more, he did so with grace, intelligence and a refusal to play the stupid wind-up games beloved by others such as the puerile Mourinho.

In my opinion, Mr Hodgson is one of the best managers we have ever had and how good it is to see that he chose to come back to his boyhood club for one last shout.

So many on here are quick to disparage him but not me.

I am, and will always be a Roy man.

Thank you Mr Hodgson, A true gent and a Palace legend.
