From memory, it wasn't his ability people questioned, but the principal of not wanting to be Chelsea's blooding ground for young players. That particular point is a valid one. Still, overall we gain, at least for this season.

Yes, that was the case for some , but without trawling past pages, to prove the point, there were more than a few , that expressed a not impressed view. Some on the basis of his performance against us at Selhurst park. Some on the basis of he hadn’t saved W. Brom, from relegation. Some thought his yellow card record was a reason to not have him. He is a good signing. Looking sharp in the training vid and dumped Macca on the floor when he dispossessed him.

I think there may come a day when this is seen as the "steal of the window". I have yet to speak to a Watford supporter who isn't gutted that he left. Hughes is the sort of bread and butter, unspectacular "glue" player that really good clubs rely on; the sort who doesn't get the headlines and you only notice when he's not there. But then, boy do you notice him. Think Martin Hinshelwood if you're a long-term Palace fan. As for Sissoko, I'd much rather have Hughes personally. Sissoko had a ten-minute spectacular period before signing for Spurs for a huge wedge and has done relatively little since to live up to the fee. He's the sort who's absolutely dominant when motivated and could be world-class if he had a mindset like Ronaldo but he doesn't and he isn't. He's motivated for a month or two once every couple of years. With Hughes, you get 80% of Sissoko's ability 100% of the time. With Sissoko, you get 60% of Sissoko's ability 40% of the time. The only place Sissoko is better than Hughes is on paper. I can’t remember if it was just at Newcastle but I heard a fact that Sissoko only scored high out of 10 when he played live on tv. Otherwise it was 6 or 5 or lower out of 10.

Put another way, the meaning of the word "potential" is essentially someone who's never delivered. Hear the word applied to a player and you'd do well to run a mile. No one talks about Ronaldo's potential. Or Lukaku's potential. Or Kane's potential. They don't have to. But players who have underachieved time and time again, they're the ones we're told have "potential". In other words, potential = wasted talent. Potential could - and should - be used when assessing young players only.

Edited by Putitout (02 Sep 2021 10.43am) I was one of those, (not the yellow cards) based on what I'd seen I thought he was energetic but lacked a bit of quality and he was really poor against us. I think he'd only managed a couple of goals as well. Signs so far are that he's plenty good enough for us and will be happy to be proven wrong. With regard to Hughes I cant honestly say as I've not followed him much and have become less interested in other teams as I've got older. However, two friends who are very knowledgeable, and whose opinions I respect, tell me they think he's lightweight / ineffective. I've an open mind. Given the opinions expressed on here about about how good Meyer, Riedewald, Mitchell and Mateta are / were I'm more inclined to listen to my mates.
