This whole completely foreseeable clusterf*ck over the Indian variant should have people seething. Can see restrictions remaining in place longer because of it. Genuinely staggered at the lack of anger towards the government for so many decisions (or more accurately lack of) that they’ve made during this whole sorry saga. I agree with most of what you have said, I think there will be local ( if not national) lockdowns again. I have always said that IMO the biggest mistake the Government made was not closing the borders and this new variant proves it was the wrong decision. However I would not criticise the Government over the vaccine rollout, which has been well organised ( had my 2nd this morning) and has certainly left the EU wanting

I know someone who lived in Bolton and knows the area the main hotspots have large Asian populations make of that what you will. I agree about people seething my patience is running thin with people who wont get vaccinated by choice. The government is now targetting the hotspots and every adult in those areas should be offered the job asap. If they decline then I have no sympathy. As for the government if Boris just moves the July end date I think the country will be up in arms. To pacify me they would have to show that this Indian variant is dangerous even to people who have had the vaccination. Unless they can do that I am not prepared to restrict my lifestyle any more. So as long as every adult has been offered the jab by July that should be the end of the restrictions. As for those who are at risk your choice not my problem. *Yup should have closed the borders to India weeks before, mind you they just come via a third country. So much for taking back control of our borders. Edited by Badger11 (15 May 2021 1.30pm)

Only just seen this Twitter thread by Dominic Cummings ahead of his select committee appearance on Wednesday. [Tweet Link]
Really fascinating insight and some unsurprising revelations and scathing assessments of: 1) Herd immunity *was* official government policy until they realised it was too late and they chose to lie about it and press believed it 2) Following Sweden as an example was always bonkers - they have had more deaths and a worse economic impact than close neighbours who locked down 3) Data has been decisive in showing that hard and fast action was only success stories in terms of minimising deaths and economic important. The west should be more willing to learn from the east. 4) The culture of SW1 rewards loyalty over competence and MPs and civil servants not fit for purpose. People under qualified for important jobs naturally leads to failure. They’re also not interested in openness, even when in public interest, nor learning from mistakes, just spinning to minimise damage. He does come across as an insufferable bellend but he certainly does look at data and cuts through it to get to the points rather than any political window dressing. Wednesday will be interesting.

Next week "Cummings speaks for the nation he knows the truth about Boris and the Tory government" Being serious for a moment Cummings will say that the government didn't have a plan and made up it as they went alone. I think we all guessed that anyway.

I think we all guessed that anyway. I think the whole world did that and didn't have a plan. The fact hmg threw money at it is to their credit. There was ,as is and has been proved no time for a meeting about a meeting to get better vfm. Money is replacable. Life has one shot.

Very politically unsettling that the major critic of Government, should come from its own ranks, rather than the Labour party. They are all cut from the same cloth
I disengage, I turn the page. |
