Thanks nettleton eagle and I thought i was worth a few thousand!!!
My hopes were dashed in your very clear and concise answer.
So I guess next stop for them is the local dump with a load of other rubbish that I thought would make me wealthy!!!

Your collection is obviously worth a lot, I sometimes look at old record shops or ebay and I am amazed at the prices compared with a few years back!

Indeed it has but I only bought it about 15 years ago from the British heart foundation shop in East Croydon for £40.

I originally also had a Ferguson, a studio 50D, that I thought was still in the attic but alas not 😔

Do any of you well informed people know if old 78 vinyl records are of any value? They are still in their brown sleeves. Maybe thirties, forties and fifties records.

One of my ex girlfriends, now a retired super model Gail Elliott, lived in tooting and whenever I was in her house I'd ask her father to play one of his Elvis 78's and he loved the fact I loved Elvis. This was back on 1973 when I was 12 but I still wish I had them now.

Alas shellac is so brittle not many lasted so they're not popular but, as said earlier, some can be rarities.

Good luck if you get something in the pile.

The last time I had a record player, it was part of a Saisho music centre from Dixons (early 1990's). I only had around 30 LP's.
My last memory of vinyl was getting up very early for work one morning (4am).
I put on Led Zeppelin (Physical Graffiti) and sat on the window ledge for 30 minutes, having a beer and a scchmoke, with a landscape of a dark empty street in front of me.
The world was perfect.

The day went downhill from there.

Let me guess the neighbours were banging on your door telling you to turn the music off.

One of the greatest albums ever. I got that as a 19th birthday present from a girl I thought was the love of my life - well, she was up to that age.

Perhaps only fellow vinyl junkies will understand what drives us to part with large sums of money for second hand records. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing or trainspotters syndrome as there is always a certain clientele in my favourite emporium (Minster Records Beverley). After last week's visit I shelled out 50 quid each for a first press of Damned Damned Damned and a first reissue of probably the most iconic record sleeve ever - The Velvet Underground and Nico, both in ex/ex condition to replace my battered old copies. Money well spent? Who cares! Pride of place above the dansette at the moment

I bought my first record in Boots of Ramsgate. Remember when strange shops sold records ? We had an Allders, but which only stocked top ten albums.
Boots and Woolworths sold a weird array of records in the 1970's and 80's. They all sold that weeks chart stuff, but because they weren't vinyl specialists, occasionally (amongst all the 5hlt) you'd come across an obscure/rare album for only £1-£2.
Our Price coming on the scene in the early 80's wiped out non-specialist record shops. And hiked the prices too.

I recall playing my own vinyl and thinking "All these cracks and scratches are really cr@p". And now 40 years later, I'm almost yearning for vinyl again.
I went to a record fair in Coventry in 1991 and saw a signed copy of a Faith no More, "The Real Thing". I let that slip through my fingers, as I was worried about getting it home safe on the train. BIG regret

Yep, that's right Hillbilly.

Woolworths sold records on the Embassy label. Basically cheap, poor quality copies of popular records of the time. Much to my dismay Dad often bought them saying he couldn't afford the real thing (I suspect he was too tight!).

I've still got three Embassy sleeves on different records and just one of the collection remains: Westward Ho The Wagons by Larry Cross. It was a film theme, but so obscure I have no idea why he bought it.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Out of idle curiosity I've just looked it up. A Walt Disney film made in 1956 starring Fess Parker. Parker played Davy Crockett in the TV series and I suspect he was the reason we've got the record. I adored Davy Crockett and always yearned for a Buckskin suit like his.

There were the Pickwick and Music for Pleasure labels too. MFP put out reissues of EMI records; there were cheap albums by Pink Floyd, John Lennon, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, the Beach Boys and a few others.

I have about 40 classical LPs, mostly purchased in the 1960s. I've never got round to thinking about whether they might be worth anything, and I suspect I never will.

But years ago someone told me that the condition of a disc was much less important than its rarity. Is that true?
