For clarification, I meant it was like Palace boasting about being better than Sunderland. I grew up around that way and my parents still live there. I worked in off licenses for a few years and that was a real eye opener to just how much crime their was. Whilst it is the nicer area of Croydon, there's still a lot of crime. I remember my friends visiting and being shocked about the black sheep's finger print scanner, or the metal detector for mucluskies. There was a kid getting murdened on a night bus on gravel hill a few years back for no reason at all. Shrubland's made national news a couple of years ago when that refugee was beat up outside the goat. If your in the right demographic, you won't see that much crime, but it's there and its pretty constant and getting worse, whilst all the bars and shops that were its saving grace are shutting down. I am not disputing the levels of crime. I am disputing that those levels are exclusive to, in this case, the CR0 area of Croydon, or being framed as significantly different to plenty of other areas in London. I am also disputing the suggestion that living in such an area means you should really be fearful of even opening your door. It’s nonsense. If you’re saying CR0 is the nicer area, that certainly isn’t true. Sanderstead? The Whitgift Estate? Large swathes of Purley and South Croydon ? Etc In my opinion the pubs and bars in the central area from Surrey street running down to the treehouse (pre Covid) had been greatly improving. And yes I remember the fingerprint scanner. Oh those halcyon days.

Only issue for me is that the historical footballing loyalties are at St James rather than Roker so if I did end up in Seaburn I would have to be rather tactful. Which I am not famed for to be fair.

Sadly I reckon there are loads of councils in similar sinking ships. The government haven’t got a clue what the impact of there meddling is yet, but it for sure is going to get very heavy.

Oh those halcyon days. I'm not saying you should be fearful, I'm saying that you shouldn't have to have any concerns when you are in public. I've lived in places where I could leave my front door unlocked all the time and my keys in my car without worrying at all, and then there's Croydon, clutching at straws to try and pretend its ok. In Sanderstead you had the Riddlesdown rapist for years. It's just crazy how kids had to be worried about being raped on the way to the boroughs biggest high school. Good to hear some nicer bars are opening in South Croydon, some of the good things about Croydon were that it's bars were always full of funny characters and nice people... when you go to some allegedly nicer places around Surrey people are a lot colder. I would add that having gone back to work in Croydon a few times in recent years it's very different to living there. In all the offices are in the area between Bedford Road and Wellesley Road, you suddenly see where it gets its grey reputation from. Growing up, I'd never need to go into that area, where its the only area a lot of people travelling into work go. Then if you walk round North End, the Whitgift Centre, Central, and what ever has replaced Alders on a weekday its a bit of a freakshow. There was a street pastor shouting at people "God say's thou shall not kill".... I really wanted to tell him that that should be f***ing obvious to anyone. Also, like anywhere, it gets stick because it's simply quite funny. The council and phrases like "Croydonisation" or "Croydon Facelift" don't really help. Great to see people are still willing to stick up for it now.

Anyway, back on topic, the PwC report into the council finances goes public next week apparently. Unsurprisingly, BXB seems to be the main loss making enterprise and the primary reason for the S114. Jerricks own government report is then not due until Jan/Feb next year. As mentioned before, I can see the govt. forcing the sale of things like the Hotel, and potentially other land acquisitions that BXB have made to balance the books.

I also failed to see, how any crime rate is relevant to the council going bust. Crime is related to the Government budget not the council.

Most of the factors that can prevent crime are run at a council level. Schools, social services, and commerce is all very much at a council level. We know they've spent a lot time and expense on buying failing businesses and stifling development when they should have been fixing a failing borougher. To make revenue, they should have been concentrating on making the borough an attractive place for private investment. Instead, they neglected their core duty and took on extra liabilities that they didn't have the capability to manage.

Everything else was there to be obstructed. Heads should roll, but of course won’t. Probably get a bonus at some point.

That policy will not change, no matter who is in charge, because of the housebuilding targets that have been set by the government.

Well it was their downfall with the Westfield deal that Westfield are probably relieved they didn’t commit to now. This is the problem with local councils. It’s all one thing or another. Always was. Far too officious and obstinate. If people can walk away they probably will. It’s those who can’t that go through pain and stress with them.
