As deals go this looks a good way to get a player in. Unless we change the way we play , he will have his work cut out.

Over this season and the last 2 seasons, Mateta has scored 30 goals in 76 apps for Mainz who are second from bottom at present and finished in the bottom half of the Bundesliga in the last 2 seasons.

I saw that it was 18 month loan with an option to buy. Although a good deal for us, seems an odd deal for them. I saw only the other day that Mainz had said they would only consider a substantial offer.

Fabrizio has just confirmed it. Jean-Philippe Mateta joins Crystal Palace on loan until 2022 with obligation to buy [around €17m] as per @domfifield, confirmed. He turned down two bids from Italian clubs and will sign for #CPFC tomorrow - medicals pending. Here-we-go soon. 🤝 @JacobSteinberg @ed_aarons

Eze should get better and better to help ease that burden, and Mitchell was keen to put crosses in during the Arsenal game which helps. If we ever end up with Benteke and a 6'4 Mateta up front this season and still don't put a cross in I'll end up throwing something at the wall. We've only got 4 players who have put in more than 3 successful crosses this season. Townsend has put in 33, then it's Luka and Eze on 7 and 12 who will mostly be set pieces, so it's totally on Andros. Signing this guy has to change our style.

Firstly hope he knows how to defend - otherwise he's looking at a good few months induction into Royball on the training ground - so we should see his debut sometime around September..!! COYP

Something like get subbed on after 85 minutes or score 1 goal...

However maybe that's the reason the structure of the deal seems to be sensibly weighted towards the try before you buy variety. If he does come then it'll be one more player than I was expecting us to sign this window. So that'll be a nice surprise. Let's hope he's the kind of striker that loves to feed off of no crosses and over hit passes

Best we can hope for is a Chelsea injury crisis if we want to send Bats back. Pretty sure under recent changes in Premier loans, you cant send them back or be recalled, unless its agreed by both clubs. Cant see Chelsea wanting him back, they are hoping we buy him.
