Last night's latest VAR faux-pas really takes the biscuit. The VAR match centre said: "The on-field referee felt that Alex McCarthy got a slight touch on the ball, and VAR couldn't see anything to disprove that." Haven't seen the incident but have read about it. VAR has been a total car crash. The fact you can't celebrate goals has destroyed the best part of football. Football decisions are too subjective and I can never see it working. Tennis and cricket are great as the rules are very black and white, as is goaline technology. I don't watch football anymore (unless its Palace) because I just get wound up with the constant over analysis of every incident. I don't know anyone personally who likes VAR and I'm just surprised there isn't more of a movement to scrap it from the game.

Adrian Durham spoke about it last night on Talksport.

I watched the game and it definitely looked like a penalty to me. Pep thinks VAR decisions never go their way, and after seeing the debacle last night I have some sympathy with him. Many VAR decisions are dubious, but the one aspect I really struggle with is offside when it's by a fingertip or elbow. I'm in the 'let's see daylight' camp. As many have said on here already, VAR is taking the thrill of the moment out of the game. Great shame.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

There are those who have complained about 'Subjectivity' in relation to VAR but the Offside ruling as adjudged by VAR is objective, it is either proved offside or onside, yet there are still those who are not content with the application of VAR in this respect.

I agree that offside is a clear rule where subjectivity doesn't come into it, however, we all know the technology at present isn't 100% accurate, so it can't work in its current form. All this arm being offside is a total nonsense and leaves everyone waiting around to possibly do a half celebration. Fouls and handballs will always divide opinion, so lets just stick with the referees original decision and move on. It worked fine before. You will get decisions go far/against you which even themselves out over time. In my opinion, the linesman are pretty good any get 90% of decision correct anyway. I'm not averse to there being a pitch side referee who can overrule a really poor decision - i.e. one that can be seen clearly is an error in one 5 second replay. Not one which requires 2 minutes of slow mo replays from 3 angles to spot a 'clear and obvious error'

I understand the objectivity of VAR in the context of the offside rule in particular. I would just prefer daylight to be the object rather than a fingertip. For certain there would be less decisions needing to be referred for judgement if that we're the case. As I said in my last post, the aspect most of us dislike is the period of deliberation before we can cheer or boo.

My view, for what it is worth, is there would still be debate about the fine margins of 'Daylight'.The devil always lies in the detail! Forget all this Onside/Offside adjudication.

Perhaps there will be a debate if part of the heel was adjudged to have been in line with the last defender! Fine margins once more! Just revert back to the old days when Assistant Referees used to get a very high percentage of the calls right, there is no delaying the raising of the flag and referees can simply stop the game to consult a pitch monitor in respect of penalties and red cards with no VAR chirping in their ears. !!!! Indeed goals will be scored which might have been 'Chalked off' by VAR but life is not perfect,VAR is not perfect !!!! I thought I would run this idea up the flagpole and see who salutes it !!!! Edited by Willo (11 Mar 2021 12.12pm) Funnily enough, I think you and I are 'on the same page' as they say. I too was about to suggest a novel new way to deal with this issue. A referree. He could make an instant decision, blow his whistle, players would happily accept his ruling and we'd all get on with game.

VAR can be a fantastic tool, but referees need their heads banging together over the meaning of 'clear and obvious'. Put simply, they shouldn't be allowed more than ~20 seconds of viewing time and that's only to make sure the best angle gets checked. If they can't make a decision in ~20 seconds, it's evidently not obvious. The point at which a line needs to be slowly shifted back and forth to hit an exact point to make an offside decision, it's evidently not obvious, so just get on with the game. VAR should only ever be in place to deal with the El Hadji Diouf dives, the Aubameyang tackle on Meyer last year - not to turn football into a science.
