Andy Burnham grandstanding he will sue the Govt, really. Who will sue who for what exactly? Are Manchester council tax payers keen to fund a massive court case. I would bin HS2 and spend some money immediately on connectivity between Northern and Midland cities, some in the South West and system wide electrification. Old Oak Common station is probably too advanced to scrap but should be repurposed to fit in with existing lines only.

Clapham Junction, St Pancras, Kings Cross. The staff at Selhurst and Norwood Junction are very busy whenever I am there.

More cash stripped out of the public coffers - nothing more, nothing less. This governments only remaining ambition is to get their hands on as much taxpayer money as they can get away with before they inevitably lose power. China have built 20,000 miles of high speed rail infrastructure in the time that we have failed to build 140 miles. China’s cost $17-21m per km. Mainland Europe have built similar projects at $25-39m per km. HS2 is costing $475m per km. India have landed a rover on the moon for $75m. The planning application alone for the Lower Thames Crossing costs four and half times that. It’s all a racket.

In the south at least you will normally have a good train service with enough trains and quite punctual if not always. Not so in the north, you're lucky if you get either of those. So why are northern mayors not addressing this, but instead forming alliances in favour of HS2 to Manchester a money-pit with no benefit except to vanity. In fact as Khan points out today the service to London is going to be considerably longer than at present due to the new station. It is an embarrassment and there is enormous reputational damage to the country in addition to all the devastation. The PM, Sunak seems to agree that the British are not much cop and that seems to be the basis of his announcements.

The problem with HS2 was doing it in the first place when the money could have been spent better elsewhere. That said, stopping HS2 when it is half built seems like compounding one bad idea with another.

The planning application alone for the Lower Thames Crossing costs four and half times that. It’s all a racket. It’s the planning process that’s the problem and it’s not going to be easy to solve because doing what ought to be done, and over-riding objections in order to reduce costs and speed delivery, would be so politically unpopular that no government will do it. The only way is a consensus between all the political parties to agree to do this, which will not happen with our present system. So we are stuck until we change it. If you have ever had to fight your way through the planning process you will understand what a nightmare of stupidity it is.

'The relationship between those profiting from these big projects and those in power is such that no one truly costs or controls them'. How true, and HS2 has never even had a budget. It really looks like you hand your chit in and the civil servants or tory ministers just carry on doling you out. It is a gravy train and nobody is even mentioning getting the taxpayers money back. That would just be ridiculous.

Planning played little part in the mega fck-up. A convenient smoke screen for total financial and Governmental mismanagement. The Government knew well in advance what the Planning Regulations were. The Regulations haven't changed. What do you suggest ? Because Planning Regulations are (allegedly) inconvenient in this instance, we should change the law ? And (for example) move homes onto contaminated land ? As Boris used to refer to inconvenient laws as "red tape". Planning Regulations are there to protect the existing environment and regulate for quality developments. much like the Gas Appliances Regulations, which some people choose to ignore.

HS2 must be completed. People said the same about the big white tent in Greenwich, the M25 and other major projects. Yes you can build schools and hospitals with the money but then the ongoing costs of those will need finding. As a country the infrastructure is vitally important. If rail or road or waterways etc. progress costs and if not now the railways will need to be replaced at some stage as they are wearing out. This would be the start of those projects.
