The cost to the nhs is paid for by smokers to be treated for a smoking related illness. ..every day tasks for a smoker become more difficult the longer they smoke long before they actually need help also the cost to industry and income is not included as it is impossible to equate due to differing reactions within a population, the cost is much much more then you realise and I'm not just talking about money, COPD is nasty and very cruel ..not just for the sufferer.

No one disputes the health pitfalls for smokers. It's a selfish choice if someone has a family, not everything's about 'I pay my way with the NHS'. I don't believe in controlling what someone puts into their body. People should have the right to smoke, or drink, but the latter in excess is clearly dangerous is someone's driving for instance, and the former is one of the single worst things you can do for your health. Aside from being a pointless habit that damages your health it's important to factor in that damage is not only confined to you. If you tank your own health, real and very avoidable pain extends to your loved ones. And of course that's before getting into the health implications and selfishness of those parents who smoke around their children. It's clearly something this individual has had a sad experience with, as you acknowledge, and so following it up with this 'try it you might like it' style and how annoyed you are with non smokers, is rather crass.

Peoples ability to work and just function normally is hugely reduced long long before they die, COPD is nasty! Yes I'm aware that starting to smoke isn't the best idea in the world for your health. It was more a theoretical point that if someone started smoking when they were old, or in a situation where their lifespan was going to be much shorter for some reason, that there probably wouldn't be any personal health implications or consequences for them due to smoking. I'd no much suggest someone start smoking than I would tell someone to drink 5 or 6 pints every night.

They may like it though.

They may like it though. Really or do smokers just convince themselves that they like it? I was a heavy smoker for 40 years and I don't think I enjoyed any of the 584,000 that I smoked in that period although I convinced myself and others that I did. The first one in the morning (generally before I got out of bed) was mildly enjoyable but it went downhill from then onwards

I don’t drive and don’t see why anyone else has to either. Why is pollution so much worse in cities? Cars. Why can’t you walk? Or get a bus? Or a train? Look at all the people killed or injured in crashes when they could have been saving the planet and getting healthier. Why should other people be at risk from speeding maniacs? The fact that some people don’t own a car means that no one has to own one.

Getting from A to B is part of most peoples' daily lives and there can be achieved by various methods depending on distance and fitness. Smoking is a voluntary occupation so can't really be compared to something that most of us have to do

Yes it’s easier but it’s not essential. No one needs a 4 x 4 to get the shopping or drop their kids off at school.

I'm thinking of giving up smoking. I'm not at all a heavy smoker - around 5 rollies a day. I'm worried about vaping as I don't want to be more addicted than I already am. My main reason to give up is my kids. My father never smoked but died of cancer when I was young.

Has anyone tried giving up and vaping instead? I don't see the point. Vaping doesn't have any health concerns according to the people with vested interests but the older amongst us will remember a time when cigarettes weren't supposed to damage health either. How can any chemical inhaled into the lungs not be detrimental?
