I was wondering why it wasn't tracked by the transponder. Turns out it was flying too low and dropped out of 'sight' for radar.

Awful state of affairs, all very sad. In all honesty if he has been in the ocean in these conditions for three days, he's got no chance. The authorities are right to call it off now. Amazing in this day and age with all the technology we have that this kind of thing can still happen.

True....Still, I guess that depends upon how much control we want to give the pilots.....AI flies a lot of these planes already.....Just like what's happening with cars if we wanted to we could pretty much take the pilots out of the equation.....I wonder just how long it is before there are no pilots at all....scary. Till that happens could we build a system where the AI always took over when pilot actions were deliberately suicidal? Probably.....But do we want to ultimately fully trust the AI over a human pilot? I'm guessing that good AI probably makes far less mistakes than pilots....and thankfully with AI we never have to worry about a suicidal nut job....just double checking that all the sensors and information and back up systems worked properly. But regardless.....the safety features we would need to implement to protect the humans in the main cabin would probably cost too much....at least from a profitably angle. I think all the possible safety ideas were thought of a long time ago.

If we can't get rid of a driver on a tube train, who is required to follow 4 simple commands on a fixed single route, we've got no chance of planes going completely AI anytime soon. Then there's the similar problem of the pilot who crashed into the ground because the autopilot programming told him he was hundreds of feet above it.

I think the first issue is more a union situation and the second just a factor of feedback maintenance.....if the systems are properly maintained the accidents, in theory wouldn't occur.....it's just a factor of how good the AI programming is...... while we know that error by human is far more common.

One wonky line on the road equals one wonky car. I'd be more sceptical about planes too but tubes/trains far less so. Very easy to put in failsafe measures.
