Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

The Telegraph has just published its 23 man squad prediction NO RLC. Wilshere Young and Delph preferred as mid-fielders

England play it safe at tournaments and look where it gets us. I hope Southgate ignores this predication and bloods the youngsters, RLC can win you a game. So what if the younger players fail. The only experience the older guys have is failure.

Clearly if we want to sign RLC, the last thing we want is for him to go to the world cup and be a big success.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

He was going even before Ox went down IMHO. Sorry to fall on the glass half empty here but in reality there is about a tenth of a pint of bitter in this glass. He is quality player, who will likely have a decent World Cup, could be a 100 cap player, is young, and is fairly unique in the premier league. IF Chelsea want to sell the guy, which is doubtful post Conte, then he can do better than Palace tbh, and he knows it. Sure - he wants to go to a team where he will play, but he would be slotting into a lot of team's midfields in this league, bar only a few. When we have made big name signings, there have been extenuating circumstances. Sakho had a major set to with Klopp, AND is prone to suicidal passes in his own box. Benteke's stock was very low, no way we would have signed him right after Villa. Most we can hope for is another season long loan, but make loan players the spine of your team at your peril.
Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha. |

Can he play central midfield though? he's not trusted to play there for Palace so can he do it for England? He's not competing with Young who will play left wing-back. He's competing against the like of Livermore and Delph for a place in centre midfield. He's a very different type of player to them and it depends on what balance Southgate wants in his squad. RLC is not likely to get into one of the advanced midfield positions ahead of Alli or Lingard so he needs to convince Southgate he can play a role in the centre.

I think he is a better midfield option than Young who as you say has played at left-back all season.

He will be going he is stronger than all of those players. Delphi come on anyone would look good in that Man City side.

Agreed, I also think Livermore shouldn't be within a country mile of the national team. I doubt Southgate will but he should be picking the likes of Winks and RLC, unfortunately it is almost tradition to make laughably bad choices as England manager. Sorry Roy you were guilty of it too, but you're great at club football.

But that's my point. Young will be picked as a left wing-back, not a midfielder, so he's not competing with Young for a place. He's competing with the central midfielders such as Livermore and Delph, probably to be back up to Henderson and Wilshere. Originally posted by Direwolf

Winks has hardly played in the last six months. RLC is a novice. Southgate likes Livermore because he does the simple things well at the base of his midfield. Delph gives optionality as a decent centre mid that can also play left wing-back. Originally posted by FairweatherEagle
